Oil consumption ?? Indicator accuracy
Discussion
I've had an oil top-up twice (1 litre ish each time) in less than 3 months (2,000 miles since last top-up), on my 2003 996. The first one was as a result of the oil warning light coming on and was approx. 6,000 miles after service. The top-up this week showed the oil level move from one segment above minimum to one below max immediately after filling, but has since shown readouts of two segments above min'm to one below max this morning. All readings have been on level ground and with engine at normal temperature (and there is no evidence of oil on the garage floor !)
Has anyone experienced inconsistent readings on their oil indicator ? Any thoughts on rate of oil consumption ?

You will get a variey of answers. Some 996 owners will say they use very little oil, others (like me) find their engines drink the bloody stuff.
the handbook suggests consumption can be as much as 1 litre every 1500kms
I was finding mine needed a top up every 2-3000 miles. however that was when i was using it every day and covering 500 miles per week. it is now an airport whore and consequently requires very little.
when i mentioned the consumption to my OPC they simply stated "some just do that Sir" .....
Would advise you to keep an eye on levels via the dippy and give your local indie/OPC a call if you are still worried

my first car drank 1 litre every 1k miles, all withing tolerance but in fairness it was turbo charged my 993 drinks a litre every 3k so it's not too bad
plus, cold starts after a good run will see you burn a few ml
Overfilling is I am told, the worst thing that you can do.
Trust the dipstick (so long as the engine is at full temperature) and don't forget to swich off the Aircon before measurement and on level ground.
Aircooled cars suffer from the issue of oil expansion --- my 993 runs on the low side on the guage --- and worries me in static traffic as the guage rises from 1/3rd to 2/3rds of the way to the red !
The GT3's not so bad --- one of the more obvious benefits of water cooling, radiators, thermal mass, electic fans etc.

As someone else said, my 997 has no engine dipstick, so I hope the indicator is accurate. I use about half a litre per 5,000km. The dealer warned me it would use some and I am OK with that usage.
A friend of mine has a Falcon GT-P (5.4 litre V8) which uses more than a litre every 2,000km, meaning he has to take oil and a rag with him on a trip (it’s a big country!).
That would be unacceptable.

"In the yellow cap" - boom boom!
I think the oil broadly goes:
1) On your driveway/garage floor out of the rear main seal, cam covers, or similar as the engine gets weepy.
2) Out the exhaust - some of these cars are 20 years old with easily over 100k miles, so they use oil, whether Porsche fanboys like that or not. There is always that "flat six" occasional puff of smoke on start up to keep owners on their toes, relating to the nature of the design!
3) Out the exhaust - but in a much more rapid fashion if you have scored a bore (or two... or three).
I use the dash indicator on my 3.6 C2 as a vague guide, but I all seriousness I use the dipstick.

Could be worse; if you run an old Land Rover you might wonder why not cut out the middleman and pour half of it straight under the vehicle.1) On your driveway/garage floor out of the rear main seal, cam covers, or similar as the engine gets weepy.
