Hi All, I know this is a bit of an old chestnut but has anybody got any advice on sensible insurance for a 2002 boxster s. Just had my renewal through from Norwich Union for £1232.44 seems high.

Is it worth joining the Porsche Club to reduce the amount ?

Any good advice would be helpful

Hit the web for Performance Marque. Might be a bit cheaper and comes with one year's free PCGB membership and PCGB Trackdays covered F.O.C.

I changed to them myself this year...

Terrific deal!

Be warned: Direct Line do not cover Track Days so if you take your P&J out on track you'll need seperate cover - which is darn expensive. If you're not into Track Days - DL are by far the cheapest - although I believe they don't offer a courtesy car in the event of a prang..

Still £847 is amazingly inexpensive - good one!

Be carefull with direct line, they may not allow repairs at official approved Porsche centres because of price, that's what they & Tesco's told me anyway.
Obviously this affects re-sale value if the unfortunate happens !!! There are some special Porsche scheme's that advertise in all the Porsche mags. but NU direct are hard to beat !!

If the unfortunate happens, its upto you where you get the car repaired, the insurance company cannot insist you use a particular repairer, or not as the case may be. Their guaranteed courtesy car will not however work if you don't use an approved repairer.

Insurance companies would like you to think that they can tell you where to take your car, due to the low rates they get charged (about 40% of what me or you would get charged), however this is c~~p. The last accident I had was in a BMW, and they wanted to send it to a Rover garage some 50 miles away for repair. I stood my ground, and it went to the local BMW dealer, which was not approved by them. I also got a BMW courtesy car, instead of the Citreon Saxos that the Rover dealer gives out.

Direct Line have to be watched however, because they quoted a price, then when I paid and was ready to collect the car the next day, they increased the premium again because I had £8,000 of factory extras. This was even though I told them the car costed £40k, an declared the 18" Carreras, for which no additional premium was charged. I was told that unless they had a full list of extras fitted, they would only replace it with a standard £31,450 car!!!. Would point out that none of the options were suspension or engine mods, just leather, cruise and a few other interior comfort goodies. They also increased my excess by £300 on accidental damage because of these so called "mods".

I found that Elephant.co.uk was a good company. Being only 22 with 4yrs no claims and living in Kent they quoted me just over £1200. Not too bad i think. Car was garaged and for social use only. give them a ago. They were cheaper than Tesco's!

I got various reasonable quotes from the majors - DL, Admiral etc. but they all wanted to load the premium quite heavily when I mentioned any extras above the base model car. In the end I went with Porsche Insurance (run by a company called 'Bowring') whose details were given to me by the OPC when I bought the car. They quoted £820 (IIRC) and said that all extras were covered provided they were original Porsche equipment and weren't performance enhancing, no mileage restriction although I'm not sure whether they cover track days (there aren't any in Cornwall). I can give you their number if you're interested, although it will have to be later as the number's at home.

Did you tell them about any "modifications"? I've got my Boxster insured through Elephant but the premium went up about 25% when I told them about my extras, i.e. bigger wheels, leather seats etc. If you've got any options then make sure they know or you might find in the event of a claim your policy is invalid!

Don't know when you need to make the decision on this, but I have the number for a specialist, head and shoulders above everyone else, not just on premium, but excess and level of cover too.

Can get contact details from home if you like?

Through Aon, though I can't for the life of me remember the guy's name. Wouldn't advise a "cold call" to try and find out, you may be there for a while - I was!!!

They managed to get a blinding deal on a 996 Turbo.

Also, try privilege - also V good, but you may need to call depending on the value of the vehicle.
