Why is the servicing on a 964 so expensive when compared to a 993?

Think it has something to do with access to the parts, it takes longer to do.

Hi

It could be due to the 12 spark plugs (2 per cylinder). Not sure if the 993 has the same?

Cheers

I think it is because the tappets have to be manually checked / adjusted, which means dropping the exhaust.
These were changed on the 993

I am pretty sure only early 964s were manual tappets ,so I would guess thats not the whole storey

I think the 964 is the most expensive normally aspirated Porsche to maintain. In terms of routine servicing costs it's almost on par with a 930.

The 993 has hydraulic tappets which don't need adjusting. The 964 has conventional ones, which do need to be adjusted - this is a few hours work on it's own due to the difficulty of getting to them.

According to JZMachtech website, the 993 is more expensive for 6k, 12k and 24k services (based on a C2).

In reality, the real difference in costs will be determined by what wears out or goes wrong, and that is car specific, not model specific except for the few known problems for both models.

For both cars you should probably budget for around £1500 a year maintenance cost depending on the condition, mileage and use.

1990 964 C2
12,000 Service £383.05
24,000 Service £667.40
6,000 Service £256.15

1995 993 C2
12,000 Service £487.63
24,000 Service £732.03
6,000 Service £279.65

Manual tappets as Ian says, the 993 has hydraulic tappets. They are a pain in the arse, even with the correct feeler guage, used to do them myself on 3.2 and 3.0 cars, which didn't need all that plastic crap under the car removing, 12 plugs too!

The plus side is that the 'expensive service' puts less knowledgeable people off 964's hence they are available at a bargain price!

cheers

Andy

Spot on

The actual servicing cost differences are insignificant compared to the expense of repairing worn out parts ( Porsches don't just " go wrong" for no apparent reason ) and this is car and driver specific. Since a 964 is going to be 14+ years old I'd be very suprised if you ever just had a service without a repair being needed as well.
