Discussion
Hi there!
Newbie at this forum
but what a great place!
I´m about to buy a 996 from -98 and I have never owned a porsche before, what should i look for when i try it?
Is there any specials to look for?
It´s run for about 31k
Have read of many of you that had to changed engine after a couple of years, I get a little scared when I hear this...
Best regards

Hi mate,
and welcome.
First point - Ignore the Horror Stories - no its not true they all need an engine after a few thousand miles.
Some have been known to let go, but this is a relative minority (regardless what the 'residual value pushing' 993 owners will try and tell you) of cars. It appears more because with the 996 Porsche made a fantastic car that sold more than any previous 911.
Things to look out for:
RMS leak - just a rubber seal, has been known to leak oil (they all do that, even the 993's), generally these get changed with the Clutch, so find out when that has last been done.
Header tank - in the engine bay, on the left, look for fluid spilt out underneath, could be cracked.
Thats about it for common faults, the key is 'Buy On Condition', dont get hung up on mileage or year, look to get a good one.
Before buying, arrange a OPC to do a 111 point check, this will find any faults, it will only cost about 150 quid, and once its done, you can buy an Extended Warranty for 900 quid.
Some people go for it, others bank the money and risk it - I bought a car with a warranty, its piece of mind.
and welcome.

Critical points to look for in a '98 996:
- 2wd
- manual
- it should have no single trace of savannah interior
In case you insist on violating these rules, don't event think about ever mentioning it on this website. No flamesuit will protect you for what is bound to happen
BTW: Welcom to the club

Note that a '98 is nearing the end of the warranty extension - 10 years limit I think. If you want to run a car with Porsche warranty you might be advised to aim for a younger car.
thats not entirely correct.
You can get an extended warranty up till its '10th birthday' or '100,000 miles' IIRC
Hi Nel!
Yes, i know that... I can´t really afford a newer car...
Bur how about that warranty? Let´s say that the engine breakes down in one year from now (in 10 years from production) is it possible to get a new one (if the failure is not my fault)?
is it 10 years btw?

If you get a warranty when you buy it, you 'should' be able to renew next year as well, which would cover any engine 'issue'
thought, really, dont worry about it...
