Just finished waxing and valeting the car and managed to finish before the rain started. I also just re-inserted the relay for the PSE so now I can use stealth mode as well as gnarly-throaty mode. I'll probably take it out again tomorrow and return to default LOUDNESS.
For the record, how many people have the PSE fitted (complete with electrics) and then taken the relay out so they're loud all the time? evil

It's just amazing how different they sound, switching between the two modes......

I'm in the process of getting one fitted in a few weeks Clarky .. I thought disconnecting the relay kept the exhaust on full time , but the switch still worked to turn the exhaust off when entering 'the home run'.

.. Is there more to this relay?.. Are you getting a different sound entirely with it out?

Yep. Disconnecting the relay will keep you in ASBO mode all the time. I'm not sure it's any different with the relay out to having the switch in the 'loud' position, but I just took mine out becasue I liked the rasp above 3000rpm so much.

I've noticed a considerable difference in fuel consumption since it was fitted though.......My heavy right foot providing the soundtrack......!!!!!!

You'll love it Ballcock. The PSE is indeed the canine's testes....

I know a lot of people are just having the exhaust without the electrical gubbins. I only had the electrical bits fitted in case for when I sell the car eventually. Thought it may help the re-sale value.

Here

bogo standard PSE system. might take the relay out in the morning to see the difference.

if you are interested, there is a hack that enables you to by pass the 25-35 sound limiter whilst still having full swith functionality. let me know if you havent got a copy

For sure, Darren. Let me know. I'd love to be able to override this.

Hi, I had PSE fitted my OPC with the switch so I can turn loudness on and off. Then I nipped to Northway indy and the guy sorted the 30-45 quiet bit out so I can have it either loud or quiet permanently. None of this quiet cut in rubbish. Best 20 quid I ever spent, took him 10 mins armed with a roll of insulation tape.

how is this done? I thought it was a case of pulling out on of the fuses but perhaps you just tape up one of the connectors.

Not sure but I knew if I tried to do it I would f*ck it up. If you remove the fuse its loud all the time isnt it? He just removed fuse panel and taped something. So quick and it now sounds the nuts.

You remove the relevent relay, open it up and cut out a tiny relay on the circuit board. Bingo-no quiet bits. And if you need it returned to quiet bits you can buy a new relay and its back to normal.

when u say no quiet bits you mean the 30-45 bit dont you? i wanted to still be able to turn mine on quiet sometimes. besides the tape is fine with mine as i wont need to buy a new relay as nothings been cut. not that i ever would though why would i want that quiet bit back.

After the mod above the switch still works as its supposed to, but there is no quiet bits between 23-35 or whatever it is. I have never heard of the tape solution myself so cant comment. But if the diode is snipped then all is as it should be, except for those frustrating quiet bits. It CAN still be switched to quiet mode, for those sneaky get aways!!!

Nice one, Bull. Just registered with Renntech to get the instructions. I'll be popping into the garage with some tape shortly! evil

Cheers,

The hack details are Renn Tech. the previously submitted link works but only for Renny members.

I copied the hack into a word document a while ago. I will cut and paste the text below, but this will not show the pictures that go with it.

If anyone wants the document mailed to them, PM me through my profile.

B - YHM

Here is the procedure:To remove the factory cut-out but allow the switch to work (PSE-On or PSE-Off):

1) Remove the fuse panel cover and the carpet cover itself by removing four screws. Release the relay carrier above the fuse panel by releasing a clip on the left and a 10mm nut on the right.

2) Pull it down so you can rotate it around to see the back. This pic shows position 23.

3) From the back of the relay carrier, remove the relay receptacle from position #23 (the "23" is printed in raised letters on the front side of the relay carrier) by pressing in on two little fingers that hold the receptacle into the carrier. Now look for the four-position jumper. There are two gray connectors there. One has two two-position jumpers and the other has one four-position jumper. You want to pull that one out of it's black plastic holder, and then remove the four-position metal jumper.

TC (Houston) Hey, why not just unplug the thing at the connection in the engine compartment like my Porsche technician told me to do? Whamo, no more cutout...sport exhaust on all the time.

Loren This mod allows you to turn the PSE on and off at will with the switch on the dash... for those that want that. I never installed the switch (or vacuum lines, etc.) on mine so it is open all the time. --------------------LorenRennTech.orgPCA member since 1978My Mods in the Registry · My Blog

How do I remove the relay bracket from the carrier!?!?Per instructions..."Remove the fuse panel cover and the carpet cover itself by removing four screws. Release the relay carrier above the fuse panel by releasing a clip on the left and a 10mm nut on the right."I did this, but maybe I don't know what "releasing the clip" means. I've moved it to the right which seems to release it. However, it just won't seem to let go. All I can do is move the side with the nut around about an inch. The left side is just not coming loose at all.Could it be that my harness is holding it in. Do I need to cut the large white wire-tie that holds it down? TIA,gk

gregking I finally got the relay bracket to come out. The left side was really tight. If I wasn't completely sure it was to come loose, I never would have pulled hard enough to get it loose.Once I got it loose and pulled the jumper off, I got the aforementioned issue of losing control of my top (2003 cab). So, I had to determine which single wire was used for the exhaust. Attached is a picture of my relay and some test wires that I used to temporarily extend the concept of the jumper. Initially, I tied all of them together and then went for various test runs with one of the wires removed until I identified which pin was for the exhaust (the one in the lower left corner). I removed my temporary wires, broke off the corresponding leg on the jumper, and put everything back together. All was good.gkAttached thumbnail(s)

kendapau Is the Boxster '03 2.7 setup the same as the 996 regarding the PSE switching hack? In other words does the same relay issue (#23) and the grey/pink speedo A wire apply? Thanks. (This question has been asked before I am sure.)

Loren According to the TSB - it looks the same. Grey/Pink wire is still speedometer A signal and they add a same relay.--------------------LorenRennTech.orgPCA member since 1978My Mods in the Registry · My Blog

kendapau Thanks Loren. I am having the dealer install my PSE with the switch kit, and they stated that they only install "by the book" for warranty purposes I guess. So I plan to do the hack myself. Thanks again.Paul K.

Neo601 yesterday my dealer installed the PSE on my car - and I recognized the problems listed in this task. In Germany the PSE is turned off between 50 and 70 km/h. The feeling while auto turn off was not very fine. With your description it seems very easy to disable the speedometer signal. But before I start to modify the car, please let me know if the doing is the same for all models. My car, 996 C2, was build 10.2002 but it is model 2001 with 3,4l and 300 HP.Can I disable the speedometer signal for my car in the way of your description ?ThanksFrank

Loren Yes, it's the same for all model years. Only the relay has changed over the years.--------------------LorenRennTech.orgPCA member since 1978My Mods in the Registry · My Blog

Neo601 ...thanks, I'll try to cut off the speedometer signal next days and send you a feedback of my work.Frank

TD in DC gregking or loren or anyone else who knows:Apart from the colors of the wires, is the plug itself labelled so that if I break off the lower left-hand leg of the jumper I can be sure that I do not have the plug upside down so that I am actually breaking off the upper right-hand leg? Thanks again

Steve Davies Neo601 - out of interest please could you tell me how much your dealer charged for installing the PSE - I am waiting for my new car to be delivered from Germany and am considering asking them to install a PSE !! Many thanks - Steve --------------------04

Neo601 Hi folks, after cutting the speedometer signal at Saturday I'am happy with the PSE. Before it was real horrible. @Steve: The price was round about 2600 Euro. Please check your EMail. But while working on the car, I found another type of relais, like described by Loren. For more information I will post same pics about it.1. Relais-carrierthe relais-carrier could be placed in every free space on the board. So it depends on the dealer in which position it is placed:This post has been edited by Neo601: Aug 2 2004, 07:25 AMAttached thumbnail(s)

Neo601 2. RelaisIn my car 996 model 2001 I found following relais:Attached thumbnail(s)

Neo601 3. Relais and micro switchAfter checking the relais I decided to insert a switch between cable and jumper 1 on the relais. This is working great. So I'am able to switch between facturing mode and disabled speedometer signal mode. This is importend for Germany, because we have a 2 year offical car check, called TÜV. If TÜV find non signed modified work on the car they will not allow you to drive any longer with this car.FrankAttached thumbnail(s)

ajc8888 I tried the other hack, posted by Eddy. It only requires removing the relay, cutting out a diode, then replacing the relay. Took 3 minutes, seems to work great without any issues so far. Just another option to consider.

arr0gant Just did it, it works flawlessly!!! Thanks!!!

Cushty.

Just modded the relay and it works perfectly.

Just a thought for anyone doing the same. If you're very careful and scratch the epoxy out from underneath the capacitor, you can simply snip the connecting pin and bend it very slightly so it isn't making contact before wrapping a 5mm x 5mm piece of insulation tape just to prevent any accidental contact. If you take the time to do it this way, should you ever wish to backtrack your handy work, you can simply remove the tape, bend the capacitor back to make contact and touch the two together witha small blob of solder. Bob's your uncle.
