Collected an 04 550 boxster yesterday and come to use the air con and the display reads 'manuelle' and not manual as its meant to/as in brochure? Does anyone know if this can be changed, or more concerning it could be some sort of foreign car..yes, i'm not totally thick, and have checked the steering wheel is on the right clap

Also, seems to have intermittent prob reading PCM sat nav CD...few marks on the CD so could be 'worn' - friendly OPC said it would cost 400 to replace CD...but surely the software is the cost, and that has already been paid for! Any advise please guys/gals. Thanks

Look inside the front boot cover and see the label stuck to the underside.

If you can see the figure C16 then it's a UK car.

I believe all 996 and Boxster's A/C displays read the same...

I very nervously checked, and it is a UK car thanks Vesuvius - and assume its just one of those strange things..did check though in the operating book. Having thought about the Sat Nav disk, I don't see why if it is a disk error I can't copy one, as I'm sure this is not piracy, considering it would just be a back-up to the original that I have bought with the car...best I get along to some meets and find a friendly volunteer beer

Oh dear. If your Boxster air con reads "manuelle" it means it was one of a batch bound for the Galápagos islands, the ship hit a rocky outcrop just south of Weymouth and sank. The cars themselves were only under water for a week or so until they were offloaded on a spring low tide.

A company in Grimsby bought the salvage and set about removing the seaweed, barnacles and sold the fish to Findus to pop in their fish fingers and jolly sailor fish pie. Initially there was a problem with their being unable to get rid of the smell of the ocean but help was at hand. One of the valteters took a 996 home for the weekend and lent it to his mum to go to bingo in. The nasty ocean floor smells were no match for her rather cheap perfume and so the solution was found - I`ll wager you can still smell a feint whisp of lilly of the valley buttercup body mist - £0.99 from martins the newsagents (includes a free bingo dobber).

Some 500 vehicles were affected and they have long since been sold by the firm (they are currently trying to remove a little bit of radio activity from a lorry load of salted cashew nuts caught up in an aborted missile test in Afganistan).

So yes, there is a reason why your car doesn`t say Manual & I hope that sheds some light on it.

edited to add that all the above is a complete fabrication and all boxsters / 996 say manuelle. Porsche obviously realised that we all knew what it meant and so there was no need to waste money re-programming the display. They invented a new "euro-word". (We shat ourselves when the first one came into our stock & we thought we`d bought a puppy!).

Where did you buy the car from, unless privately then why arent you asking the dealer to provide a replacement cd as supplied one not working

You could also have a friendly IT person pop the CDs through a copier. Then use the copy and keep the original pristine in its packaging - for when the copy you made "wears out". In reality the "wear" is scratching from putting the disc in and out.
