Go for the S. It's better to fork out the money at the beginning as you will most likely want to upgrade pretty soon after getting into the 2.7 anyway and switching cost is high. Don't get me wrong, the 2.7 is an ejoyable car but only the S is really as fast as you'd wish a roadster to be. I drove Boxsters for 7 years and found it to be a very capable car which offers lots of entertainment whilst being very practical (value of two boots not to be underestimated) at the same time. I for sure did not regret it. Had they come up with Carrera level of power in the Boxster, I'd probably never have moved on to my 997S.
3.2 S.
It's the only choice. Any Porsche is an aspirational car, but you'd be really disappointed if you didn't get the S. If you got the 2.7 You'd be constantly thinking that you haven't got the one you really want. Plus it'll be worth next to nothing in a few years time.
Get the S mate, you won't regret it!*
*unless like me, you are the worlds most unlucky consumer and you get one that has a faulty gearbox and have to fight for 6 months and threaten to take the garage to court in order to get a replacement...

Lets not malign the 2.7 too much. I have friends with both derivatives and the guy with the 2.7 really likes it. Having driven several 3.2's he still says it's got enough power for him, and he likes the high-rev character of the 2.7.
That said, my friend with a 3.2 says he wouldn't be happy with less power, and he's glad he got his 986S over the 987 2.7 he was also considering.
I personally would go for the 3.2, as the running costs are comparable and it's a noticably more capable machine.
Any thoughts on whether you'd prefer Tiptronic S or manual? That was a tricky one for my friend (in his case it was 986S tip vs. 986S manual vs. 987 manual !).

3.2s definately, and get a 550 anniversary, tighter and more grunt,as much as can realistically be used...
The anniversary models still command quite a premium, even over very high spec, very late 986S's. I like the idea but I'm not sure it's worth the extra cash unless you're really after it as a status symbol. I'd be inclined to go with a late, high-spec 986S. I’ve driven the 987 2.7 and the 986 3.2, it is a tough call but I think if I was going to keep the car for 1-2 years I’d go for the 987 2.7 so that the maths would work better on the residuals.
There is little to chose between the two in terms of outright real word pace, or at least that was my impression, but I think that if was going to ignore what happens come resale I’d be hard pushed not to go for the 986 3.2 fully loaded than the poverty spec 2.7.
Whatever anyone else says there isn’t another car like it that has half the practicality / reputation and style of the Boxster.
I’ve not driven a 2.7 986 but would suggest you forget it, just go straight to the 3.2. You’ll always want that little more and I can say that the difference between the 2.5 and the 3.2 is lightyears.

Having spent a fair few hours in the last week looking at the prices and so on of these you might want to add another grand to that to get a top spec facelift in really good condition.
I wouldn't bother with a pre-facelift one though if your spending this sort of cash.

You may even find that the seller is quite flexible on price if you could rustle up a few G more and make a sensible offer.

I`ve had both and would vote for the S. I thoroughly enjoyed my 2.7 but I only bought it because I was too young to be insured on an S - as soon as I was I bought one!.
Realistically, for 90% of buyers, the 2.7 is more than enough - most 3.2`s are bought by those more interested in the badge and the red calipers but for genuine hooners the S is easily worth the premium.

For me it's manual any time as the tip is just plain horrible...
