The 2.7RS was available in four variants

- RSH (base car for Homologation)- 17 built
- M471 (aka 'Sport' or 'Lightweight')- 200 built
- M472 (aka 'Touring')- 1308 built
- M491 2.8RSR - (the wide bodied 'Race' version) - 55 built

Prices are c. £90k+/- for a good M472 Touring, c.£140k+/- for a good M471 Sport, £250k+ for a 2.8RSR.

Obviously there are many 'replicas' around - of varying quality

Get a copy of the brilliant Gruber & Konradsheim book - 'Carrera RS'

I would also recommend "Porsche 911 R-RS-RSR" by John Starkey.

As well as the varied quality of some replicas there are also many more so-called 'Original Cars' around than where originally built... I.E 2.8 RSR - 55 built over a 100 in existence!! As for books the RS bible is indeed very detailed and accurate but lets not forget that writing a book on these very varied spec cars does not proclude innacuracy.... I can also recommend the Ulrich Upietz book '911 in Racing' as well as 'Porsche Story' by Julius Weitmann. These books have great pictorial reference of the cars that raced and show what equipment was used in period. Lately the german publisher Motor Buch Verlag have produced a volume set and other books purely on racing 911's that go into vast detail both from a technical standpoint and pictorial reference. Lastly the other 'Bible' is the 70's publication on Porsche by Lothar Boschen and Jurgen Barth. read

Geneve, in the current market you would be hard pushed to find the 'best cars' for the aforementioned values. A good 2.8 RSR with history!!! sold in the US last summer for 600,000 dollars.... There is no value on an original,un-restored S/T or RS-RSR with good provenance.....

The differences are quite big between them both, best to read some of the suggested books or web info.
Be careful with numbers made, not even the factory or rs bible are sure 100%.
I own a car that is a M471 and M491,M491 is not just for a rsr spec car.

The rsr has a lot of chassis strengthening ,in the engine bay area ,center rear tunnel ,front inner wings,
917 type brakes ,Special gearbox with oil pump and cooler,9 &11 inch arches to match 9&11 wheels.
Different instruments ,flock dash board ,Fire ext ,electric cut outs ,thin gauge body panels on wings and main tub,2.8 or 3.0 engine with high throttle bodies or later cars with throttle slides ,between 300 and 350 bhp ,twin spark ignition ,heads ,larger fuel pump ,odd seats driver and navigator or racer ,big front engine oil cooler ,plastic gfk bonnet with balsa wood stiffening ,race tank, etc
Hope this helps

An epic 2.7RS is coming up for auction. One of the most significant and sought-after air-cooled 911s ever produced.

Even the prices of the books have gone crazy. I went to look for the John Starkey book and assorted sellers are asking between £350 and £750. Sigh...
