Have just bought an '89 carrera - car has 17 inch porsche cups and does not have the "feel" I would wish (have had an 83 SC with 15 inch fuchs and this handled like a dream) - does anyone have a view on the best wheel combination to get the most feel from the drive? Many thanks, Angus

Update 9 Feb 8am (australia time) - thanks to all - will change from the 17 's to 16 fuchs - 8s and 9s seem to be the go ! - thanks to all and yes it is an 89 not a 964 ! cheers ... anyone interested in 17inch cups !

Ok - under immense pressure (!) now looking at 7s on the front and 8s on the back ! Many thanks to all for the support; now to find some track days in Sydney that will allow me to test it out (have found a supplier for the wheels!). thanks again to all !

Ultimately they were designed for 15" wheels. However 16" fuchs are OK and I would recommend 8's and 9's if you can find them. This was the set up on the very late 89 3.2 carrera's. 17's throw in the skip

Good advice, and I will get a skip in specially if you'll throw them in it! Seriously, though, I would be interested in buying them.

On a 89 car Fuchs look great - Cup wheels look wrong!

Sell them and buy some fuchs.

Most 3.2 Carreras had 15" (6s&7s)

Sports (SEs) had 16" (6s&7s to '88 and 6s&8s in '89)

Turbo sizes were an option but, IMO, 'over-tyre' the car. I'd prefer 6s&7s or 7s&8s

Whatever the wheel sizes, it's the tyre choices that are probably more important.

15" wheels with 205/55s and 225/50s are very good for track use as they lower the car and shorten the gearing.

Finally, IMO, the classic Fuchs always look best on the 3.2 Carreras.

Another vote for Fuchs.

15's are very hard to get at sensible money. 16's are fine.

yes

Keep the old cups and fit them with winter tyres.

Isn't an 89 a 964. that being so it would have had D90's. 16" dia, not 17" cups.

The 964 is a nineties car, 89 is G50 territory.

some good sets on ebay right now. I always thought the 3.2 Carrera's were all 16"s. My Turbo look is 16 with the turbo wheels, but not sure what width they are.

89-94 for a 964, with a G50 box, sorry to be pedantic as the OP doesn't say what car it is, carrera doesn't mean much mines a carerra, but carerra what????

Gents/Ladies - thanks to all for the comments (car is not a 964 by the way) - will change over from the 17 inch cups to 16 fuchs - 8s and 9s. Good news is that I may even make a buck out of this !

thanks to all for comments

Fuchs are definitely the way to go, but, FWIW, I think that you'll find 8 x 16s on the front too wide. You're better off with 7 x 16s fitted with 205 / 55 tyres ( or 205 / 50s if you insist ).
Rear as you say looks good with 9 x 16s ( if you can get them ) with 245 / 45 tyres, or alternatively, 8 x 16s with 225 / 50 tyres.

I'd definitely recommend 16x7s&8s on 205s&225s rather than the the 8s&9s.

Only the Turbo can justify those widths.

Agree that 7s are the widest recommendation for the front, but putting 9s on the rear of a 3.2 is likely to accentuate the understeer.

My 930 has 8 x 16s with 225 / 50s on the front and it is just too much - the car is more responsive when fitted with 205 / 55s or 50s on 7" rims at the front.

Isn't it technically a G64?

My low mileage '89 Carrera SE is all original, I beleive.

Has 6x16 & 8X16 Fuchs and roadholding is pretty sublime. Not lifting the trottle in the wet is actually the real problem. I wouldn't want anything wider that 6's on the front, otherwise the steering's going be too heavy and I reckon it would out handle most 2WD cars as it is.
Incidentally I fitted a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel. Looks great and feels great, even htough it's a little smaller. If you get one, don't forget the 10mm offset boss, so you can see the dials.
