Which service?!?
Discussion
Ok, thoroughly confused after a conversation with my local OPC...
My car is a '99 C2 manual, with 55k on the clock and a full OPC service history. It had it's 48k service at 41k two years ago (not sure why) and a minor service last year at 47k so what do I need this year?!? Minor, or bi-annual major service? The service 'advisor' seemed confused and could not tell me what was included in each service and, more importantly, what my car requires.
Any opinions much appreciated!
Chris

They are confused as the manual isn't clear:
www.porsche.com/filestore.aspx/default.pdf?pool=uk&type=download&id=porscheservice-servicepricing-type996&lang=none&filetype=default
Minor service: 12k or 1 year
Major service: 24k or 2 years
Annual service: if less than 9k driven a year
with the note - Annual service doesn't not substitute a Major service.
(does this imply that it does substitute a minor one?)
So I have seen low mileage cars taken to the OPC every year for their recommended service that have:
Annual
Minor
Annual
Minor
Annual
This isn't even the owner skimping, this is what the OPC recommended.
Whereas what I think the manual is saying for low mileage cars is:
Annual
Major
Annual
Major
Annual
I.e you can substitue a minor service with an annual inspection on a low mileage car, but you can't substitute the 2 yearly major service.

and don't forget the brake fluid change every 2 years!!
Thing is, I've just had the fluid changed with my pads so that's not needed! So I was trying to get them to explain the other differences between the minor and major and all he could give was a 'belt inspection'. I asked how that accounted for the extra £1xx and he said he didn't know!

Ok, car is now in for a major service but can anyone confirm what is included in this? Specifically, is the cost of oil included in the £538 as I've supplied my own and still been quoted the full price.
Thanks,
Chris
Thanks,
Chris
Im pretty sure the oil and other sundry items will be extra. Also, if it is a major service they may try to sting you for sparkplug replacement too!

so the 'inclusive' price isn't all that inclusive then? Trying to get a straight answer out of them is like getting blood from a stone and no two people seem to quote the same price from one minute to the next.
Time to bend over and think of the car's history...

Chris - I hope you took it to an specialist, asking an OPC to do it is like throwing 500 quid down the drain and having a YTS fitter spannering your P&J.
Unfortunately not, might be selling the car this year and as it has an uninterupted FPSH to date (and warranty) I couldn't bring myself to break that history.
Whilst you and I know the true value of a good indy (and the car has all other work done by an indy), I can't help feeling that the FPSH will make the car a lot easier to shift.
It goes annually (or if 12k comes up before)
Minor (12k)
Major (24k)
Minor (36k)
Major (48k)
Minor (60k)
and on and on and on. If you drive less than 9k miles in a year you can get an Annual Check instead of a minor BUT you then have a MAJOR next time....
Other items.
Every 2 years Brake Fluid
Every 4 years or 48k Belt and Fuel Filter
Every 36,000 miles Spark plugs
Every 96,000 transmission fluid changes
EFFECTIVELY
You have just had a minor service, so next one is 12k miles or one year after and is a major service.
Brake fluid yes or no depends on time it was done last
Fuel filter and belt should be done four years or 48k after the last time
Doh. Look, go through the list which is linked below.
If it was a minor last time, then it needs a major. And vice versa.
Then go through each line.
Does it need plugs (has it done 36k since the last time?)
Does it need the fuel filter and belt (is it four years or 48k miles since last time?)
Does it need brake fluid (was it done last year or not?)
Does it need the trnsmission fluid changing? (has the car done 96k miles yet?)
Easy.
