Does anyone know whether there is any point in replacing the standard air filter on a 1999 C4 996.

I have been looking at tweeking etc, and come across a K&N air filter offering better performance, through better air flow etc.....

Is this a load of rubbish, am I wasting the best part of £70 in replacing the air filter.

cheers

I was wondering the exact same thing.

I've got an '02 C2 and was thinking about a K&N. Does it actually make any bl*ody difference to performance?

Does it affect your OPC warranty?

Anyone got one that can answer these questions?

okay, for the 996, or Porsche specifically, I cant say.

However, look at it like this.

An Air filter simply filters the air.

The only way you could improve performance is if the K&N one passes air through faster, or at a higher volume. Thus creating more O2 in the combustion, thus increasing the performance.

However, the only way for this to happen, would for it to filter less, so do a less good job of what it was designed to do.

Throw into the mix, that the likely improvement in performance will be less than 1 BHP, but perhaps a sharpened response, is it really worth it?

Nope.

Case closed. Thanks for the response.

no worries, as I said, I have no experience of these on the 911, but have had on other cars, where I havent noticed any difference moving to a 'performance filter'...

Now, an induction kit with cold air feed and high flow cone filter, thats a slightly different situation..

The filter can be more free flowing because some filters are designed to have filter spray on them (not paper), this catches the crap more like flys on fly paper instead of through a paper eliment. BHP not a lot, may improve throttle responce slightly, sound better, needs less service to the filter ie last the life of the car.
Personaly I think their a load of crap as just a filter
