Hi there.

This is my first post on here. Just need a bit of advice for a friend.

Friend has a (2003) 911. He is very happy with it but has had a problem recently with a sticking tappet. This causes the engine to go lumpy and the engine management diagnostics to direct him straight to a garage. If he stops the car and re starts it the problem clears. But obviously this is a hassle.

Porsche have stated that the way they would treat it is to strip the engine. I guess, take the head off and clean it to stop the problem occuring. They want £1000 for this which although not excessive, puts an unnecessary dent in the wallet if an alternative solution is available.

He has heard that doing an engine flush will probably solve the problem.

Does anyone on here now what this would entail, how much it would cost and where such a treatment could be carried out.

Many thanks,

Nat

Different car (944 S2 - outdated tractor by everyone else's opinion on here!) but I had a similar problem. I posted a thread on the PCGB site, here:

www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=262053&mpage=1&key=&#262053

... where I was advised to try some stuff by Wynns. I have tried it, and it seems to do as it should. The tappet is much quieter (not silent, but much much improved.)

My initial reaction is one of surprise that a sticking tappet would throw an ECU fault code. A sticking tappet will make noise; what's the fault code?

The 996 02 onwards has flat base tappets and has 2 moving parts and can cause a valve lift problem and log a fault code.....you could possibly trace the fault to 1 of the tappets but its a warranty issue to replace all 6 of them only inlet tappets are of this design.... £100 X 6 tappets...plus labour.

get it on a tester and see what fault codes are present.

If you need a 2nd opinion then give us a call...

I could always be wrong but I doubt this is a tappet - is it a 3.4 or a 3.6 (just checking I know what year is claimed)).

Thanks for the comments.

Not sure about the details of the car.

I will point the owner at this thread and hopefully he can provide some more detail.

Cheers

you have got one of three things wrong. plug faulty. ignitioncoil cracked. or one of the douhble lift tappets is faulty. even if it is tappet fault, it will just show up as missfire on that cylinder. regards scott.

If it is a tappet on a 3.6L car it will come up with a misfire code and a valve lift control failure code....

3.6L cars do not suffer from vario cam problems.....unlike the 3.4L cars.
The only problem they have with vario cams is the unit itself turns on the camshaft and the valve timing is out !!
There is a little friction washer behind the unit and its job is to keep the unit in that position when tightened up with the long through bolt...as there is no key to the camshaft...and it slips more than you would beleive...

thanks for your reply mike sounds like you know what your on about. if it was the hydraulic unit for the tappets or even the camshaft vavle. the fault and miss fire would be on hole bank of the engine and the vehicle would just about run. if the tappet is faulty it does register a missfire fire on that cylinder. trust me i should know!!!!! it just sounds to me like someone took there car to the wrong place and had it wrongly diagnoised.
