Hi All,

I sold my Chim today, mainly to raise some funds to pay for a new business, leaving a rather large hole in the bga fleet.

In a couple of months I'll be looking for a replacement & quite fancy sampling something from the Porsche stable :-)

I've got a few q's & would be very grateful of any of you could provide your thoughts...

1. Is a 964 (coupe) a more refined/relaxing place to be than a Chim?
2. Is aircon a popular option (a reasonable amount of time will be spent in Spain)?
3. Is £15k enough to get a reasonable one?

Cheers

Probably not. The 964 is an 18 year old design - more refined than a 3.2 certainly, but a Chim - nah!!

2. Is aircon a popular option (a reasonable amount of time will be spent in Spain)?

Not in RHD examples. Many LHD cars had a/c, particularly the German ones but it's fairly rare in RHD examples.

3. Is £15k enough to get a reasonable one?

It should be. If it's going to spend time in Spain maybe you'd be better to get a leftie and £15K should get you an excellent C2/C4. Don't go thinking you can get a Celebration or RS for that money though.

Here's a good one for starters - www.pistonheads.com/sales/102609.htm

Cheers

Thanks for the info thumbup much appreciated. Unfortunately the missus will have to drive the car & refuses to drive LHD, maybe I'll take her to see some & try & change her mind.

I take your point about the car being an 18 y/o design, maybe it would be better to ask if it's possible to have a conversation with a passenger at 80mph? I couldn't in the TVR (roof on or off) which was a bit wearing at times.

Never drived a Chim, bven with a sports exhaust, a 964 is pretty refined although some cars have more wind noise than others - something that can be fixed I believe. Some tyres are noisier than others, Michelin and Continental being the best quietest IME.

If you'll be driving to Spain a lot, the offset pedals in RHD can cause serious discomfort after a few hours at the wheel. This isn't a problem with LHD and on top of that, you're more likely to find air-con and probably save yourself £2k with LHD as well.

Even if the car has air-con, I'd recommend getting that inspected before you buy as it can cost well into 4 figures to put right if broken. Same goes for the rest of the car as well, really.

All good info, thanks. If it's just wind & tyre noise then that's no problem at all. I've also got a renault 5 with brick like aerodynamics and no sound deadening & that's not too bad.

Looks like the case for LHD is a strong one.

No problem having a conversation at any speed which you are likely to achieve on public roads in my 964. Why won't she drive LHD ? Has she never driven a hire car on holiday ?

She's driven hire cars before, but very badly. She had no problems driving the Chim in all weathers so the mechanics of it isn't a problem, rather the special awareness!
I'm thinking that with appropriate encouragement it may not be too much of a problem
