Guys,
Having never really looked at buying a porsche before now, I have recently taken a liking to the Carrera S, this was after seeing a re-run of the top gear article in which they featured this car along with M6 and the Aston Martin, I think it was on the isle of man.
I need some sort of quick guide as to which car to look for, and what to look out for on any particular car.
It's maybe a lot to ask, but I need to start somewhere.

Thanx, Steve.

Steve, best bet is to go to a dealer pick up a brochure and see what you want on the car and the colour combo you like best. (Or 'Build your Porsche' on the Porsche website)

You'll find the price differences between vehicles is solely dependant on the equipment levels.

Must haves are very personal, hence no 'used' 997 S is the same.

Fair comment, obviously I will be looking for a used model, so when did they last change, ie. new model.
The porsche range is an absolute nightmare to get your head around, with so many different types of the same model.
Lets say I had a budget of 30-35K, what sort of car would that get me.

The one you're talking about is the 997. The S has a 3.8 and the non S has a 3.6 which is the similar to the earlier 996.

There are cabs and 4 wheel drive available in both as well as manual and tip. There is now also a targa but thats 4 wheel only.

You are not going to get into a 997 for that kind of money.

You will get a 996. Probably a facelift which is 02 and newer. Facelift has different headlights a glovebox and the 3.6.

The obvious thing to do is look in the classifieds here or on Autotrader but a 997 Carrera S is way over your budget. I think you're looking at a 5 year old at least 996 within your budget.

The model range isn't that difficult once you know what to look for - it has been covered before on here(try a search), but the basics are as follows:

Carrera 2 = basic model, rear wheel drive, available in Coupe and Convertible formats
Carrera 4 = basic model, 4 wheel drive, available in Coupe and Convertible formats
Carrera 2S = Sports model, rear wheel drive, available in Coupe and Convertible formats
Carrera 4S = Sports model, 4 wheel drive, available in Coupe and Convertible formats
TT = Twin-Turbo, 4 wheel drive
GT2 = Twin-Turbo, rear wheel drive
GT3 = Track-focussed, rear wheel drive
There is also a 'targo' model with an electric glass roof

I think that's a good start, but someone will correct me if I've made a mistake.

Note that the current model is the '997' version of the 911 - For £35k you will probably be looking at the previous version, the '996'

Guys,
Taken your advice and have been looking at the 996, there are some really nice cars around, but the mileage puts me off some of them, really high. The other question I have, is , should I be looking for a tiptronic or a manual g/box, always thought that you should have a manual box in a sports car, but I stand to be corrected.
At what mileage are the big services on these cars, or does the servicing on Porsche not work this way, I am going by BMW types of servicing, where you have different levels of servicing with oil changes in between.

Thanx, Steve.

Firstly be very careful when you mention 'that' word on here - tiptronic !!
If you're going to drive it like it's supposed to be driven, then go for the manual.
Servicing I think is every 12,000 miles with the 'bigger' ones at 24k and then 48k, not too sure after that.
Brake maintenance can be a source of big bills especially at OPC's, many people either do this themselves or use a good Indy, I certainly would too.
Remember to get an OPC warranty.
If you search around the forum there's a lot of info on this subject.

OPC??
Anything to look out for engine wise, high servicing costs I'm used to with BMW, and I'm quite good with the spanners, so anything like brakes etc. I will do myself.

OPC - Official Porsche Centre
There are a few engine issues much talked about on other threads, hence the OPC warranty is deemed worth getting.

So the OPC Warranty can only be purchased on cars up to 9 yrs. old? What happens if the warranty has run out but the car has been serviced etc. at an OPC. can you then take out this type of warranty again, or is it like BMW warranty, once it's gone it's gone.
Also, this 111 check that I read about, is this only at OPC's, sounds like a must have.

If there is a gap in the warranty, I believe you have to pay for the 111 point inspection, and also any identified problem fixes before they'll sell you the warranty. Best buy only on condition it passes, but ideally one with a current warranty.
After the 9 years I think the OPC warranty as you say is no more.

steve

brakes are very easy to do as is other basic servicing.

if the car you are after does not have the warranty then you can pay £250 to an OPC and they will inspect the car. As a previous poster said, any problems need to be recified but if the car comes up with a clean bill of health then the warranty can be issued (Cost £895)

on some occassions if a car is known to an OPC and all the servicing work has been completed by them then they may agree to put a warranty on without inspection - this is certainly the case with my car.

OK i am being a little biased, but the 3.6 Carrera 2 is a peach to drive. great torque, fab feedback and superb handling.

Mine is a high spec with full OPC history and is due to go in for service. Its nto yet up for sale but if you are interested, then email me through my profile.

Otherwise good luck in your search
