Owner Camraderie

Some are unrecptive, others quite good. Target an enthusiast and you should get a wave. The Red Baron always used to attract enthusiastic owners, with many riding shotgun until the reuqired m'way junction.
Even got a salutory wave from a 928S4 owner after I overtook him at 160
Some of the Boxster lot were uselss tho'. Many obviously traded up from a Z3 and didn't know what an older Porsche looked like. Therefore I would try and suss the enthusiasts before waving.
Best for waving at a 964RS were 3.2 Carreras and 964s...

Damn right!
I think the clinically unbalanced amongst the fraternity (I include myself) have developed something of a complex about this.
I'll never forget the virtual marriage that occurred whenever encountering other Tivosi, so I made sure the same would be the case when beetling.
Although I think the 911SC cap 'n' pipester I encountered coming t'other way on a B-road pre-Brunters sesh last week was rather more concerned with not experiencing a high impact meld c/o the attrocious camber bouncing than making minor pleasantries...
Actually, come to think of it, I see very few pigs being thrapped to hell and back when out mooching. I think they're all 'dayn sayth.'
And the 996s in Cheshire don't count because they never seem to have fitted PATM* properly.

There was a good letter in one of the Porsche mags a while ago, very witty, on this very point. It refered to perceived pecking order's, roughly along the lines of people wave to those on a "level" but generaly refuse to wave up or down the model chain (e.g. is that old thing really a Porsche..down, or I could afford two of those if I wanted but prefer my XYZ...up)whilst NOBODY waved at a 924 !!
This is REALLY SAD but unfortunately (away from the enthusiast's pool) all too often true. I'll wave at anybody, but particularly young attractive blonde's !!!!

You never did change your speedo over to mph, did you Dom ?![]()
LOL

Actually it was already changed over. Must admit that the 928 held me off for a good mile or so... only gained above 130. No wonder these 964RS owners go for 9Ms +3 toaster package.
All in Germany on private roads, of course.
Rule of thumb is 996 C4 or C4S - no chance of a wave, too busy trying to work out why the cupholder isn't big enough for their Starbucks Latte. Turbo, GT3, GT2 - if they're not going too fast - good chance of a wave, they've bought it for what it'll do, not what it looks like.
Boxster - too difficult to call that one - general rule of thumb is - girlie driving it - no chance, too busy trying to find choke to hang handbag on. Bloke with 5 o'clock shadow and Hoxton Fin hairstyle - no chance - too busy thinking about his next pair of Evisu jeans - middle aged couple - good chance provided they're not going too fast to take one hand off the wheel.
Anything older generally driven by someone who owns it 'cos of what it'll do - exception to rule being those people who drive South to North across Tower Bridge - best not to wave at them unless you want to "purchase" something or invite them to swap their car for yours.
Love the comment on the speedo

havent had any good responses in the few days ive had the car, even waved at a guy in a 968 cabrio but he didnt respond, boxster and 996 drivers seem to stare for a bit than move on
best was a german registered silver 993 that hovered around me for a while in traffic, guess he was trying to figure out what a 968 Sport was

dontlift - the use of 'T****R' as a means of addressing another PHer goes beyond what is acceptable on these forums.
Peter964RS was stating a fact, but you may (rightly or wrongly) have construed that he was being 'anti-water cooled Porsches'. As has been seen before, this is almost as contentious an issue as Porkers vs Tivs

However, by spouting stuff like how Porsche drivers will end up driving TVRs (a matter of opinion at the best of times) and then going on about how a 944's 'engine is in the right place' is hardly a calmly reasoned counterpoint. More like a deliberately inflammatory counter attack...

Sorry to bin you, but please keep rants as reasonable as they can possibly be...

Ok, get ready to shoot me down in flames but this is how it is for me.
I've done 20,000 miles in the last 8 months in my 993 C4S.
I always used to wave at everything with "that" badge on the front, irrespective of engine orientation or cooling type.
HOWEVER:
I NEVER get responses from 996 and Boxster owners.
I don't usually get responses from 924/944/968 drivers.
I always get response from 928 drivers, and always get reponse from air cooled 911's of any age.
So make of that what you will.

Hmmmmn. I (oftentimes) wave at other Porsche drivers.
Never get any response from 944s, 924s, 911s from pre964 etc. They obviously think I'm being condescending or something because mine is a "new" car.
Very rarely get a response from another Boxster owner. Occasionally get a response from a 996 owner.
What was hilarious though was that when I DO get a response its usually totally OTT involving lots of headlights, a cheery wave and an enormous grin.
Basically I wave at everyone - and the enthusiasts wave back.
In the Tivver we wave at all other Tivs. And any British classic/sports car. You should have seen the classic MG owners wave like mad.
Its all a bit of fun.
Of course...in a marque like Porsche there will be those who bought one merely because it was expensive - then there will be those who bought one because of what it is - and hang the expense. If you see what I mean...
Edited for crap speeling and gramaargh!

"Hang the expense" ?![]()
I bought the 944 because :
a) It is an understated car
b) it is considered 'serious' by people who actually are enthusiasts.
Well...these days Thom a 944 is a good value car with adequate power, fun handling and there's every reason to have one at that budget level. I wave at 944s myself - they just don't seem to wave at ME!
Oh..."Hang The Expense" - an idiomatic expression meaning that the person purchasing whatever item considers it the correct thing to have - and that the high level of cost is irrelevant.
I think enthusiasts who buy Porsches simply do not care that the car is relatively expensive - they purchase it for its potential and nothing else.
