You gotta love Chris Harris.......
Discussion
Just reading this month's GT Porsche. Chris Harris surprised himself by nipping out and buying a Cayman 2.7. Then before he gets time to recover goes and buys a RHD 993 RS as well!
And then his stripped and rebuilt project 911 is nearing completion as well (and I can't wait to see how this one turns out).
You have to love this guy.

I was intrigued with his piece in Autocar last week, he said that if he had a requirement for 2 seats then the Cayman 2.7 would be the only car he would ever need!
Interesting......I enjoy driving a cayman S on the odd ocassion presented to me, suprised the smaller engined 5 speed cars purity wins the day?
So now when he walks out of the house to find the Cayman and the 93RS, it surely won't take too long to decide which to take?

Chris is a brilliant motoring journalist imo for this exact reason. He walks it like he talks it.Too many motoring mags are filled with 'reviews' written by those who have experienced only the briefest of brief squirts in the sportscars they are writing about, often no more than a few hours here or there.Chris on the other hand is able to communicate a much fuller experience and so the comparisons he's able to draw are far more intricate and informed.99% of motoring journalism seems to go something like this:
'I was invited with the rest of the world's motoring press to drive the new Ferrari,Porsche,Lambo etc. It's a bit faster/nicer/more modern than the last one.I had a really good day out.Er,that's it.'
Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but the proof of this would seem to be that when a new car comes out all the mags' reviews tend to read along very similar lines and so what you actually learn outside of the pure technical data is so narrow. How can it be any more when most of the early tests are totally stage managed.Give me Chris's experiences of buying/running/driving some of these cars properly, especially given that he also really knows how to drive in a way I suspect few other journos do.

How much do these journos get paid? - I'd always assumed not a lot - is he a publisher too??
(Sorry, I think I might have just crossed a PH taboo - questions anywhere near "how can you afford that?" are very un-PC in PH - rightly so)

I'm sure it is pretty taboo. Although CH let something slip in GTPP this month about getting paid to write about the cars he buys. He was going to get a new GT3, but decided against it because some bloke who comes round here already had one and they wouldn't want two write ups every month. Whether this was tongue in cheek, I don't know...

Errh, so whats your point exactly?
I think Harris is a great journalist. And more power to him if he can afford a bunch of decent cars....hes certainly got his priorities straight!

Interesting that part of his justification for not getting a 997 GT3 was that Pugsey had one, so Chris wouldn't be paid for writing about a GT3.
Now Pugseys has gone, what's the betting that Chris is at the Bristol OPC tomorrow doing a frantic deal to chop the Cayman in for a 997 GT3 RS?
You do have to love him
I'm dying to see how he gets on with his 911 restauration/modification project. I get an itchy wallet and fingers when I see stuff like that going on. Mind you - he seems quite restless, so I'll look forward to seeing it on sale shortly after he's finished it and has it just-so. A nice colour please, Chris. Not too keen on solid black.
