964 or Boxster?
Discussion
Hi all,
Im looking to replace my daily drive (MX5) for a porsche. Ive always loved the 964 but is it viable for a daily car or would I be better off with a boxster? Is the 964 cheaper to run or is the boxster? Im not too worried about the performance, I have the cobra for that, Im really after handling, fun and reliability, hence why I have the MX5, after 4yrs Ive only changed the oil in it every year, I dont expect that sort of reliability, but I dont want to have to constantly be working on it,
Phil

Hmm, 964 or Boxster.
I had the same quandry and went for the Boxster in the end. I don't think there's a right or wrong choice, but as it was to be my only car I needed a really good all rounder and the Boxster is certainly that.
After owning a Boxster I doubt I could go for a 964 in the future as I've become far too used to all the creature comforts. However a 996 is another matter.
Alternatively I've often considered the prospect of having a 964 or even a decent 3.2 911 and having a daily runabout as well.
After about 8 months of motoring I don't have a bad word to say about the Boxster. Plus summer is comming and - as I'm sure you realise - getting the roof down transforms thedriving experience.
Still hanker after 911s though
Happy hunting!
Bbo.

Had a 964 as a daily driver no problem at all in fact it went better as a daily driver than when I reduced the mileage down to 5k pa, so if you ubuy a well sorted one £15-17k you should have no problems and I'm sure the 964 will be more fun and you wont be referred to as a hairdresser!
I use a '93 964 as my daily drive and have a GT3 as my weekend car.
As a previous poster said, it goes better for using it every day. The running costs are relatively cheap. General consumables can be found at many indies and don't cost alot. Mine also has all the creature comforts such as leather, a/c electric / heated everything. After the best part of 100k miles in 9 years it still runs phenomenally well. As it is 4wd as well even the bad weather doesn't stop it.
I have only driven boxters for short periods so couldn't comment on it as a daily hack for for months on end.
And if you ever come up behind a Boxter you'll be able to scoot round it and disapear up the road

Unless the road bends of course

I went down the Boxster route - as I could get a warranty and would be using the car as a daily drive. My heart wanted a 964 but the head made the final decision - full OPC warranty and the fact it was newer vehicle just made it make more sense.
This aside ... I would still love a 964 Turbo for the weekend, evn wiht my 997 ... I blame Bad Boys ...!!

Might need more maintenance than the Boxster or a eurobox, but a lot of people see them as perfectly usable every day cars.

Who cares? If you are buying based on other people's opinions and if you just want to own a "Porsche" for X budget to pose in and for it look as flash as possible then this is something to take into account. If not, then sod what other people think.
Yes - these are good reasons to justify your conclusion to buy the Boxster.

And you've let yourself down again...
Hi all,
blimey, thats cleared that up then
Im not worried about it being perceaved as a hairdressers car, currently I have a yellow MX5, so you dont get much more of a hairdresser than that, I bought it for the wife 4yrs ago and I loved it so much I kept it and bought her a new beetle. Im not too worried about performance either as neither of those models will compare to the cobra anyhow. I do like the idea of the 964 but running costs put me off it a little, if it went wrong I guess it would cost more than the boxster. The only answer is to try both, I need something chuckable like the mazda, but with a little more power and a little less gay looking, hence why I was concidering the boxster. I do prefer the look of the boxster, but Id prefer to have a 964, this isnt going to be easy, cant afford both, already have 3 cars,

I got both within a few months of each other. The 964 was an RS though and not really suitable for every day use.
You won't be disappointed with a Boxster though. It's grown on me more and more over the last 9 months and it's a great car to drive on the road. If thats what you want it for, get the Boxster.
If you yearn for 911 owning experience, get the 964.
