987 Boxster S or 911 996 C2 Convertible?
Discussion
Help needed!
I am currently in the position where I have the choice between an 18 month old Boxster S or a 4 year old 911 convertible. Am I right in assuming that straight line performance is very similar?
1.Which is the best drivers car?
2.Just how practical are the rear seats? My dogs will fit in them which is great, but can a small adult fit in there too or is it just a bit tight.
3. What is the air buffeting like on each?
Any other comments are also welcome!
Cheers,

Buffeting on the 987S with wind deflector is non existent. Unless you really really need the back seats I'd go for the 987S if you are defo. after a convertible as it was designed from the start as such and has useful boot space for touring.
Drive one and you'll buy it.
I heard a comment that the 996 cab didn't seem as torsionally stiff, but that is heresay - I haven't tried the 996. I do know the 987S is totally rigid though.
Yep I agree if you can put up with limited cabin space the Boxster S is a gem. The boot space is worth a mention I can get my golf clubs in the rear section and the front is not a bad size either. I bought mine a few months ago and its the best roadster I have driven. Even at this time of year it's v good with the top down. With the heater on wind and deflector in on a cold day its very civilised.
As the Boxster is quite a bit lighter than the 996 convertible at similar power, the maths are on the side of the Boxster. I found the Boxster to be a fantastic car and had I wanted another convertible I'd have gone the 987 route for sure.
There is the iconic status of the 996 which is hard to put into figures and rational argumentation. However, then you should go for the 996 coupe and not the convertible anyway.
I don't share the dismissive view on the Boxster that is held by some on this forum. In my view the Boxster S is the best value for money offer in the Porsche range.

Having owned my 996cab for 3 years my little daughter loves it in the back, plenty of rear space (particularly if you remove the seat bolsters). Kids up to 9 have no problems sitting behind the passenger seat (I am over 6'5" so NO one can sit behind me!).
Matter of taste but I don't like the boxster's 'look', and the iconic 911 has to be the one to have!

I didn't really like the Boxster shape until the 987, the shape of a new 987S is Meteor Grey I think looks every bit as good as any 996. Have a look at a new one if you haven't seen them recently, much better proportioned than the 996-cab IMO, much closer to the old 550 spider look.

That is certainly a very nice looking car
Well I've now driven 2 911 Cabs and to be honest have found them very plain; I'm only 6ft but the driving position feels awkward. One minute you feel cramped, so adjust the chair slightly and you feel miles away from it all!!! Anyone else experienced this?
Yesterday I went to Official Porsche dealer and did a back to back test of a 996 C2 cab against an 18month old Boxster S. The 911 felt so nervous and twitched at ever bit of input I put through the steering wheel. The Boxster S put it to shame and in all honesty if didn't know better I would have said was the more expensive car.
So does anyone think I've been unlucky with the 996'2 so far or should I just get the 'S'? The thing is the 2 back seats would be really useful for our dogs....

Although I would recommend the 987 Boxster, don't underestimate the 996.
The steering characteristics are 'what's known as feedback'. It is telling you everything that is going on and, for many, it's the 911's steering that makes it feel so special. Can take a bit of getting used to, but once you do, most else feels numb.
Secondly, every 996 should have a PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust). It transforms the car's character. Without it the 996 does feel and sound a bit sterile.

There you go, thats why the 911 wins, the Boxster is a great car BUT it just does not have the "just in case" back seats.
Most cars only ever have 2 passengers max but they all sit 4 or 5, just in case, that is why the 911 is such a great practical car.
How would you fell on a sunday going out to the country to take that dogs for a walk, having to walk past your porsche to take an ordinary car so the dogs can fit, when you can have both.
Anyway do you relay think you would be using the performance diffrence between these 2 great cars?

Cool! It's not just me who bought (and you may buy) a 911 for the dogs!
