Thought I'd try to tap into your knowledge.

I've seen the following two cars at a local Porsche dealer. Which makes the better buy in your opinion ?

Both 911 Carrera 4.

1) 59k miles £25k
2) 28k miles £33k

I'm tempted by the cheaper one but am worried about the reliability (after the 12 months used car warranty is up) and the re-sale when it tops 100k kms.

Thanks

are they both the same year? if they are the same car apart from the mileage, the cheaper on is the best bet.

Buy the one you like best and the one which feels right, no hard and fast rule but common sense.

If you want a 996 there are a lot more than 2 to choose from.

If your budget takes you to £33k(ish) you should find a 3.6 'facelift' with fsh, all the right bits, c.30k mls etc. Get a PPI, buy a Porsche warranty and renew it each year. And, IMO, the C2 is just as nice, if not nicer, than the C4.

The cheaper one is very close to 100k km at 59k miles. About 3000 miles. Or did you mean 100k miles?

Thanks.

Cheaper one is a 00 with GT3 alloys. The second is a standard 01.

I'm planning to drive both this week.

Try and find a 2002 MY '3.6'. Worth the extra.

Drive both. Whichever feels better go for that one.

Am I missing something here. £8,000 for 30k miles difference. Wow, that`s incredible. With the difference you could almost put a new engine in the cheaper car and it owe you no more money.

Assuming both cars are pre-facelift then there is simply no question about it. Save the £8,000. for £33/34k you`ll buy a decent facelift car (we`ve got one at £34k).

Between 30k mls & 60k mls on a 6/7 year old car either could have done more work than the other, it depends on how they`ve been used. In any case there is just no way 30,000 miles makes £8,000 of difference at that point in the car`s life. The 60k mls 2000 car is very good value at £25k. The other car all the money at £33k. Obviously I haven`t seen either car and given there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche tread with caution if something looks like a bargain!

All the best.

How many miles has your facelift one done Henry?

Cheers.

We`ve got a few in stock at the moment but the one at £33,995 has done circa 60k mls from memory. I`ve said it a thousand times before but buy these cars on condition. The number on the speedo dictates the most you can ask but that`s all. The car`s condition prices it up to that point.

Hope that helps.

60k miles, might be an idea to keep it under 4k rpm till at least 75k miles, at 60k its still not run in

Thanks for all the replies.

I hadn't realised until tonight that the newer, more expensive car is in fact a facelift. It has a spoiler that looks like a thinner GT3 one without the side skirts.

So it's the newer car and engine but I can't stop thinking about Henry's comment. £8k is a lot for that mileage. I assume the same stands even if it's a facelift. It would justify some of the price difference but never £8k.

That 8k would go a long way to maintaining
the cheaper car and would therefore be my
choice. I'm looking for something similar
myself.

If one is a facelift then that should be a significant factor in your considerations.

Problem i find with this thread is i cant imagine an OPC selling a facelift 996 Carrera 4 with 28k miles at £33K?? I may be wrong but i find this price a tad suprising - by all means if they do have one although i have not saw it on there used car search then i would personally grab it with both hands today!! BEFORE I DO!! LOL, 645 looks asif its going tommorow!!

I thought price was low but there is no mention it's an OPC. Just a dealer.

That's true.

The 3.6 was more than just a 'facelift'. The 996 was a brand new car back in 1997 and it was progressively improved over the years. However, the most extensive refinements and upgrades were introduced for the 2002 MY cars, so there will be a justifiable price jump between the 3.4 and 3.6.
