I've been a bit lazy with the bucket and sponge over the last few months and notice that the polished rim on my 18' sport classics (rears only) are now looking decidedly matt.

I have had a go at cleaning, but seems they have had it. Has anyone had a set of these refurbed? If so, do they come up OK?

I would like to return them to their former glory and feel gutted at myself for being so lazy.

Paul, before you get into costly refurbishment try some Autosol. You need to use masking tape between the tyre edges and the outer rim, tear it into short strips and follow the curve of the edge of the rim, making sure that the tape goes right into the gap.

Also, do the same with the inner edge between the rim and the painted centre piece of the wheel (if its the split rim version) The key to it is in the masking, it takes time but works really well.

Apply the Autosol by hand working with the curve of the wheel edge and buff it by hand too.

Give it a go...

Thanks David.

They are the proper split rims, so i'll need to do some careful masking but I'll certainly give it a try- and then i'll clean them more often!

Refurbishment means the full dismantle of each wheel just to get at each outer rim to polish it. Then you will end up paying out for the replacement M7 split rim wheel bolts - 19 per wheel at about £2.00 each!

I have heard that Vaseline applied over the polished edge protects the finish a bit, can`t confirm this though...
