I've enquired about a 993 C2S on the PH classifieds but it's had `6-7 owners'. Do you reckon this is normal for a 10 year old 993 or is it the sign of something dodgy afoot. Seems a bit on the high side to me.

Wouldn`t worry me at all - judge the car on its condition not on people who you will know nothing about. I was told that the average owner keeps his porker for 18 months.

They can get passed along as people finish 'owning' a porsche and having been there, done that, move onto the sensible econobox.

You really need to see in detail how well the car has been cared for, i.e. beyond routine servicing - does it all work, are there things that should be fixed, etc.

It wouldn't worry me - and didn't, when I went to see the car I ended up buying but had had 6 previous owners. Given the age and type of car, it seems not to be uncommon.

From the digging the previous owner of my car had done, he had found out that one of the earlier owners had had it as a fourth car and been forced by his wife to sell it after 3-4 months to rationalise his collection biglaugh

It did make me wonder whether there had been problems in the past but the service history showed it had had new clutch and brakes recently and it came through the PPI showing no real areas of concern so I wasn't overly bothered by the number of previous keepers.

As Mr Firman says, buy on condition and evidence that all the usual issues have been addressed and work done.

About the same as mine, dont let that put you off. Let the condition, lack of bills and history worry you more.

No problem, each owner will probably have spent a little extra money quite happily on his new P&J, getting it just right.

Might actually help you in a round about way!

Am I right that "personal" plates can also bump up the owner numbers?

I've just bought a 5 owner 993C2S, I was worried at first, so had Peter Morgan do a PPI, it got a excellent report. The car is in immaculate condition, low mileage (33,000) with a full service history and a well documented history,I'm very pleased with it. Buy on condition, get a PPI and don't let number of owners worry you.

Some years ago a change in numberplate used to show up as new owner.

my TT has 9 previous and it was by far the best car i'd seen and haven't really had to spend a penny on it in the last 3 years. Every owner checks a cat when they buy it so it's been checked over at least 9 times in its life. Every owner spends a little 'touching it up' hence why it was so immaculate.

PP, I had that on my old 3.2 SSE, when a previous owner kept a cherished no. it took several phone calls, 4 letters and photocopies to make sure Swansea got the V5 right!

Thanks for the advice. That's a good point that it'll have had a new inspection each time it changed hands. Hadn't thought of that!

I've owned four, helped people out with purchases of at least a dozen more, and been to see fourty or fifty in my time. Anything up to 1 owner per year isn't usually anything to worry about, lots of people buy a 911 because they always wanted one, once they've had it for a year (tax, mot, insurance, etc.) they pass it on...

Again quoting Henry - "buy on condition"

Good luck! And show us pics when you buy it!

number of owners never bothered me, most people are enthusiasts who keep for 12-18 months, i'm on my 4th and the longest i've kept is 2 years.
