Porsche 924 - looking for something cheap and cheerful

Hi there,
Currently in the market for something cheap and cheerful, don't want to spend more than £1000. Fancy a car to use for weekend fun, and possibly the occasional track day. Sort of a rolling restoration that could go two ways - dedicated track day car or restored classic.
Looking round and have seen plenty of Porsche 924's for sale.
Is the 924 any good as a first Porsche ? and will it give me something that I can play with fairly cheaply.
Not sure if trackdays are my thing but fancy giving them a whirl.
Also can you use the 924 as an everyday car ? and what should I look out for.
Appreciate many people on this forum are used to cars costing over £10,000 but I am not sure of a specialist 924 forum (any suggestions welcome).
