Hi all,
Quick question how things work in th UK. I'm about to buy a car from a private seller in UK. I want to insure the car when im driving it from the seller to Sweden (via ferry and denmark) where my swedish insurance company will insurance it as soon as it hit swedish ground. Thing is? Do You know how it works in the uk for a foreigner that would like to buy a car? I need a temporary insurance from the time I buy the car for 2-3 days until i hit Swedish ground. Anyone have any input how to do this? The insurance companies in uk wont give a Swede insurance.

Any input would be grateful..
Cheers

Gustav

can't you insure the car on the chassis number with your sweedish insurance?

I have done this a few times when I've imported a car or had a registration transfer

Yep, it is insured on the chassinumber bur only when it reaches Swedish ground... so as long as in UK and denmark it doesn't cover... so I need something that cover the time in UK and denmark..

why are there exclusions on the policy?

doesn't insurance have to offer pan-european cover?

It should be that way european union and all but somehow the insurance world seem to manage
to avoid that...

You need to talk to your Swedish insurance company. Surely they can arrange international cover for a few days for a reasonable price.

Trying to get UK insurance will be - problematic, I think. The companies systems will all want things like your home address and postcode (UK style). Even "dayinsure" seem to want your driving licence number...again - this may be problematic.

Have a look. Maybe they'll work for you. Read the small print, though.

I ran into something similar 3 years ago bringing a 993tt in from France. The issue seems to be that insurance companies in the EU can't write policies outside the countries in which they're registered to operate. The end result is that a UK company can't insure a French car, for example. I thus couldn't get cover from a UK insurer until the car hit UK soil.

My solution was to have the seller drive the car to Calais and I drove it through UK customs and immigration and onto the train.

Things may have changed with regard to insurance regulations in the past 3 years but I expect it'll be a challenge to sort out. Can the seller at least deliver the car to the UK port?

I had a similar problem last year. I bought a car in the North East of Sweden and had problems getting it insured so i could drive it home. Insurance companies wont insure for road risk on just the VIN anymore, also wouldnt insure the car for overseas use as it wasnt a UK registered.
We got round the problem by using trade plates, but this loophole has also been tightened now.

What i would suggest is ask the seller if he can get you added on his insurance for a short while or get the car delivered to the ferry.

I tried with dayinsurance.com but averything fell on that the car was imported
to UK fro Germany back in 1996...it is classed as an import and they don't handle those for som reason.

try A-plan as suggested. They're pretty good.
