Hi, I'm wondering if my 911 996 needs a new clutch. I don't have much experience of things mechanical, so please be gentle...

Selecting gears has become a bit more awkward, and when I finish driving the car there's a bit of a sort of burning smell coming from the back. Last night I decided to drop the clutch away from some traffic lights at about 4k rpm, to see whether that would give me any evidence. The clutch pedal seemed to only come up about half way, I might have interpreted it as the clutch slipping but I was too busy dealing with the speed that the bloody car generates!

Any advice gratefully received.

I had this, the spring went on the pressure plate or somthing.

turned out it needed a new clutch and that fixed the problem.

if you have a warranty mabe you need the RMS doing?

and then get them to throw a clutch in whilst they are at it

I had a clutch failure last year and mine had a burning smell - it was the clutch release bearing failing and I had the clutch and RMS replaced and fine now ( My wallet wasn't !!)

The pedal not returning is a known issue and may or may not be linked to your problem. See Pcar site for pedal hanging solutions.

Roughly how many hours of labour is needed on a C2 clutch? Any idea of rough indie hourly rates? Want to make sure I'm not having the wool pulled over my eyes.

Whoa there!!

All could be perfectly normal!!

Gears can be quite notchy when driving from cold (especially 2nd) but should free up considerably once the gear box oil warms up , it sounds normal enough to have the clutch bite about half way up , and the smell could be that cloud9 smell that ALL 996's give off (just under the rear wheel arches) when they've been given dixie .. It's the smell of a happy exhaust!!

I'm not saying your clutch isn't failing , just don't get suckered into a new clutch when none's required..

What mileage is up on the car?
Do you know if the clutch has been changed before?

Having the same quandary myself at the moment. Car is in for an RMS change in a couple of weeks and clutch is getting quite heavy and bites about two-thirds of the way up - no problems (slip, judder etc.) with it though. Car is at 35K miles and on original clutch. Been quoted £380 + vat from my OPC.

Worthwhile swapping out the clutch plate while it's in, or just unnecessarily cautious expense?

Your thoughts are welcome!

I've just had my PMT changed under warranty , and went with a clutch change which they said was 60% worn .. It's a no brainer I reckon.. If you're lucky you'll never have to change either PMT or clutch again and if you're a Porsche Club member , they'll give you another 10% off that clutch price.

(I'm sorry , I can't bring myself to use the other three letter designator...)

The shift action has changed to become more awkward, even when warmed through. When I originally had it the shift would free up, as you say, once the oil had warmed through. 3rd to 4th, which used to be very sweet, is a bit lumpy. The smell could well be just cloud9, and it has always made the smell. The car has a bit under 45k miles on it, I don't think the clutch has been changed, no records of that in the file of bills I've got.

Thanks for your advice!

I take it the £380+VAT is the cost of doing the clutch while the bits are off to do the RMS? Is the RMS being done as warranty work? I got a quote of £650+VAT from an indie to do the clutch, which seemed a bit expensive to me.

Yes - The RMS is under warranty (well, goodwill actually!) so the £380 is the whole cost for both. Not a bad deal eh?

ETA - You're right, £650+VAT does sound steep for the clutch - probably close to OPC pricing. You may want to shop around your indy's a bit - I'm sure you could get that price down.
