If I understand it correctly, the latter 944's were fitted with a light weight forged version of the Design 90 style 16" wheel. How can you tell these apart from the standard wheels and does it matter - i.e. are they significantly lighter/stronger?

Not quite correct.

From 1987 to 1989 the 250BHP Turbos were fitted with Forged Clubsport wheels that looked like this:

When the S2 came out in 1989 they had a similar design cast wheel called Design90 that looked like this:

From 1990 onwards the Turbos also switched to the heavier Design 90's but in wider sizes

Well the 928 uses the same wheels in different sizes & the forged CS-club sport/GT wheels came out in '88 & where replaced by the D90 cast wheels in '90 or '91 . So the forged ones came first.
The D90's have a 1/2 inch step at the rim & the CS wheels dont, they blend out
These are D90's , you can see the step at the rim.

Wow, I am continually amazed by the depth of knowledge of my fellow PH'ers read many thanks for the clear explanation.

Now for the tricky part - is there any advantage one way or the other?
