OPC has just confirmed that i can buy the road tyres(fitted) £1038+vat. Ill confirm what they are in a minute. Im taking the cups away not to waste on road.

Is this cheap, expensive or value?

I remember buying Toyo R888's for my 968cs for about 500/600 for the set.

Ok this is what OPC have sent me:

"Best Price I can do then for the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 is 1038.93 Plus VAT"

Will i be able to get these else where?

At last!

Be interested to know what they are, whether they are GT3 specific, and do they have a rim protector?

That is absolutely extortionate for road tyres.

My first check has been with national tyres.

Fronts 235/35 ZR 19 = £245.50 inc vat each

Rears 305/30 ZR 19 = £304.50 ind vat each

= £1100 vs Porsche £1220 fitted

So with my new GT3 probably on the way to the UK at the moment, do I :-

1) Take the car with the factory cup tyres and get non-cups in 4000 miles?

2) Get the OPC to swap the cups for non-cups (at no extra cost)?

3) Keep the cups as a spare and get non-cups as well (cant really afford to)?

£1200 for a set of four tyres? wow what a rip-off! That's double the cost of a 996 GT3.

If you are rarely going to track id say try and swap tyres for no extra cost.

Depends on usage. If its mostly a toy/track car I reckon the cups are the tyres to have. If you see yourself doing a lot of road miles than perhaps the road tyres make sense, but they will probably overheat after a lap or two on track, and then fall apart if you don't take it easy.

Might be worth looking into other road tyres that fit, as that is an outrageous price for road tyres. They should be approx 600 quid.

I think Toyo are coming out with some R tyres that fit in the middle of the year too which might drop you down to 700 quid, at a guess, for a set.

The unfortunate side effect of cars getting heavier and wheels getting ever larger is that consumable costs keep mounting. Cars can't start getting lighter soon enough.

I run the Toyo T1-Rs on my MK1 GT3 and I'm very impressed with them. As you say, about £700 a set.

Dan,

What do you use on your RS and what do you get out of them track and road combined?

I'm using Toyo R888s which were about 620 quid for a set. These are R rated tyres, but I don't think they are available in 19" sizes for the 997 yet. I used to use the OEM fit Corsa Systems which are halfway between an R and a road tyre. They were about 650 a set. Maybe road tyres have gone up in price since I last looked, but I'd have expected them to be less than that!

I double checked this for when mine need changing, apparently there are 4 tyres now approved by Porsche for the 997GT3
in addition to the Michelin & Pirelli Cups
These are:
Pirreli PZERO Rosso N1
Pirreli PZERO Corsa NO
Michelin PS2 N1's (as above)
& a Bridgestone NO rated tyre that I didn't get the name of as it was stated that they are too firm for the GT3!
I'm keeping mine to run them to the wear limit & then changing later in the year, hopefully they will last the summer & I can change in time for next winter!!!

Maybe it will be worth keeping the worn tyres (or selling them???) as track day only tyres?

That is so interesting that all say Michelin cups as standard, I thought so to until my car turned up with Pirelli P Corsa's, I did query this and am waiting for a reply from dealer. Best price I can get Michelin cups is £1,123.30 including VAT.

I'm confused and dont know what to do rolleyes

I'm probably gonna be doing 3000 - 4000 miles in my first year and may only take on track once, if at all, in the first year.

Am I right in thinking you cant have cups on the front and non-cups on the back?

If the OPC was to swap the tyres over from cups to non-cups would I not be due a refund? Or would i be better selling the cups myself after having non-cups fitted?

Or for ease just leave the cups on and expect a bill for new tyres in April 08?
