Off to Paris on Thursday and need to know a couple of things:
1) Is it a DIY job to convert the headlamps to continental position, or do I have to pay my dealer to do this for me?
2) Presumably I need to take some spare bulbs – how much am I likely to be fleeced for this?

Thanks in advance (before anyone asks, I don’t have access to the manual at the current time!)
Cheers

the 996 process was to whip the headlamps out and change the settings - a 10 minute job each side. I suspect the 997 is similar.

as for the french requirement for blubs, i simply took a pack of blubs with me to wave at plod if they asked. I did enquire with my local OPC as to the ocst of a litronic headlamp blub - £200 iirc yikes

Is it no longer a case of sticking deflectors over the lights?

yeah, i think to drive on the continent you need a spare bulb kit, a high vis jacket and warning triangle...

For the bulbs, halfords specials should do..

Online manuals for various Porsches:

http://coochas.com/porsche/otherpcar.

You can adjust the vertical alignment yourself but horizontal has to be done by a pro. You can buy the headlight stickers on the ferry for a couple of quid.

I think the stick-on deflectors are prone to melting when used with Xenons!

Thanks

I swapped them over last year on my 997 no problem. Had issues reverting them back though although that was my own stupid fault and nothing to do with the design...

Is this detailed in the owner's manual?

Here's mine - as you can tell, not a 997 but proof they don't melt and yes took a couple of mins to fit:

Yes, its in the manual. In short you use a long screwdriver type tool to undo a bolt (located on the inner wing) which loosens the lights. These then slide out - you flip a switch at the back and replace them - job done.

Sounds easy - maybe I'll give it a go on the Shuttle on the way over !!

thanks

Try it at home first - the lights can get stuck if not moved for a while, and can take a bit of force to get them out!

I did that coming back from Spa, got some funny looks popping out the headlights on the train! Do try at home first though!

Hi mate

You need a bit of space in front of the car to do it as you need to stand directly in front of the car when you pull it out. Eurotunnel don't give you much space up front so this may be an issue.

On my 986 boxster I tried to switch the lights over and snapped off a bit of plastic that cost loads to fix, just a warning!

I now just stick convertors on my 997, seems to work fine...
