Neither am I, but the very best upgrade would probably be advanced driver training. It's transferable between cars.

Hardly much point unless your talking about a 987 3.4 S, i would rather move up to a 997 or 996 911. I own a 986 2.7 now and have drove many 986 and 987 3.2's and for a few more hundred quid insurance and 0.5sec quicker to sixty or 1.5 to a hundred or whatever...it just wasnt worth it. Im sick of hearing all this talk about 2.7's and 3.2's its not as if the 3.2s is going to leave a 2.7 standing and disappear from it...if your wanting something much quicker buy a 911 or get an engine transplant...haha.

ages ago i saw an ad somewhere (autotrader or such like) for a Boxster that had had a 3.6 carrera engine transplant.

Dont know whats involved and i would never have the balls to pull a boxster apart to such an extent BUT it would be interesting to know how well it performed......

www.autofarm.co.uk I emailed these guys ages ago asking about their conversions, here is what the guy said:

Transplanting a 996 motor into a boxster is indeed possible.

Its really only suitable on a Boxster S as the gearbox is much stronger and more capable of taking the power.

A 3.4l 996 motor knocks out 300bhp (50bhp more) so you will see a substantial increase in acceleration and a slight increase in top speed. Actual figures I do not know as we have never tested for them.

Alternatively, you could go further and utilise a bored out 996 motor which increases your power and torque figures still further. We have the technology currently to go out to 4 litres with around 390bhp.

The only changes required to fit these engines are to the electrical looms, the motors bolt in with relative ease.

Sounds like a great deal of fun and the fact that you could blow many quicker cars away with a wolf in sheeps clothing

I am on my 4th Boxster, in order 986 2.5, 3.2, 3.2 and finally a 987 2.7. I completely disagree with you. When you take into consideration the braking, extra cog and the power, the S is significantly the faster / better car.

I down graded to a 2.7 to "slow down a little".

Really?

The better brakes on the S don't make it quicker, they don't even stop the car quicker (the tyres do that) although with serious track use, the S brakes will be less prone to fade and arguably give more feel and as such, I'd agree that they are "better" I'd even go as far as saying that they are worth it!

The extra cog is a mixed blessing though (at best) as there are times when you'd be better off in a 5-speed and reducing the number of gear changes.

Obviously more power is "better" overall but it's the torque of the S that probably swings it but I'm not sure the entry price is truly worth the extra.

In the real world, it takes a very well driven S to pull away from a non-S and if the non-S is one-up and the S is two-up, it becomes nigh on impossible.

Great cars both of them!

P.S. Yes I have a 2.7! I would like to try a 3.4S but would not get too excited about a lesser-S. I'd also like to try the RUF3800S!

P.P.S. There are always bolt-on supercharger conversions to consider but I can't imagine that these are nearly as good as the fully engineered conversions that alter the compression ratio etc.

Can I suggest you actually try a 3.2 S. INFORMED opinion will tell you it IS a significantly better car if you want to drive sportingly.
If you don't, which is fine, the extra cost might be hard to justify.
