Do the coolant lines heading from the cylinders to the rads pass close by the fuel tank!!??

The reason I ask is that I've noticed recently that when I sit in traffic , my coolant temp slowly rises from it's usual 80 to about 90 before the front fans kick in.

HOWEVER when the fuel tank is close to empty , the coolant temp gets up to 90 quicker than when the tank is full!!

Am I going nuts or is it part of the design that the fuel is used to cool the coolant?

Electrical f**kwit speaking here (so take this with a pinch of salt ) The gauges most likely share the same voltage stabilizer, it could be the level of the fuel tank is throwing the current being sent to the temp gauge.

Ask Mike @ www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/profile.asp?h=0&memberId=58031&f=48&t=369682 he's a smart cookie !

Have you tried using different octane fuels? This should give you conclusive proof

The choices in Ireland are 95 ..... and diesel hehe

I'm wondering if anyone has an idea where the coolant pipes run , and if it's designed into the system that fuel is used for cooling ..

Guessing and pullin de p1ss is , of course , obligatory , seeing as it IS the PH Porsche forum.

Actually the cooling pipes do indeed pass by the fuel tank as they pass down the centre of the car in the front tunnel, the void shared by the (996) fuel tank.

That said I`m not sure of the cooling effect. I think you`ll find the petrol warms up as you drive and un-used fuel passes back to the tank having been warmed by the engine.

So no, you`re not mad, just a bloke with too much time on his hands !

Thanks Henry , I've been working unusual hours lately ... normally it's shift work so I never sit in traffic , but for the last week it's been close enough nine to five .

(Fughin hate rush hour !!madarguetankdrivingsmash!!!!!!!)

....So I've had plenty of time in my slightly over-heating car to think it all through!!....
