997 TURBO / GT3
Discussion
Hi
I'm a member of one of the better known 'supercar clubs'. Have had the luxury of driving some very nice cars of late which is great. Two of which have been the TURBO and GT3. I always thought i would be a Turbo man, thinking that my limited driving skill and attraction to toys and technology would put me off the GT3... how wrong i was! I drove the GT3 a few weeks ago in built up traffic for about 15 miles and thought it was very docile and could not see what the fuss was about, until i got onto the open road and my views quickly changed.
I took the Turbo out a few weeks before and that blew me away as expected. THe only negative being lack of aural drama...
I suppose what i am trying to say is, i cant choose which i prefer. Maybe the 997 GT3 is more compromised this time round (ability to use day to day) that this is why I also like it!
Im borrowing the Turbo again this weekend to try and make my mind up.
When ( and if) i am in the position to get back in a Porsche full time, my decision will be a very hard one!
I did try a Cayman S also, and that was great, as good as the other two above 8/10ths of the time...but thats another story....
Right, Rant over... i can go back to work now!

I know what you mean about the lack of aural delight on the 997 Turbo - this was easily fixed on mine by a change of exhaust system (to Tubi). I went out last week in a pals 997 GT3 RS and this is so so different. The trim standard, noise levels, standard of comfort - ideal and fabulous on track mind you. Depends where the car is going to spend the majority of its time - oh plus the Turbo has the rear seats, so acts as a good all round family car!!

Graham, just out of interest, were your OPC ok with the Tubi swap? Did you get anything on paper from them to confirm?
Yes I checked with the OPC Warranty Manager and was told that they wouldn't 'warrant' the exhaust or cats - which goes without saying. If they could prove that fitment of any after market part caused damage to the car then I'd probably be left up the creek so to speak - i'd then be looking to the supplier of the exhaust. Alternative is swapping back to the standard exhaust before having any work done on the car. Did I get anything in writing - not a chance!

I have now had my 997tt for 6 months and it is growing on me day by day. In the beginning I was a bit underwhelmed and in line with other people I was thinking that it lacked a bit of drame or involvment but 6 months later I must say that this is the best and most complete car I have ever owned. It is stupidiously fast and whether you are around town and want to place it in traffic or on the open road the acceleration in this car is sensational. It blows everything in its path away. The gearshift (manual) has loosened up, the clutch bites at exactly the right place and upshifts from 1st to 2nd which were a bit difficult in the beginning are flowing freely. This is a car that needs time to be fully appreciated and exploited. Enjoy.
