...has decided to stop working. First sunny weekend in Glasgie for years and no sunroof to take out. Anyone know if this is a common electrical gremlin on 944s...press the switch and nothing happens. No motor noise no nothing. There are so many micro switches and relays on this car I aint sure where to start.........

Start by looking at the fuses.

If you are desperate to open it, there are instructions in the manual about opening it manually.

Checked all fuses and relay.......all of which seem to be fine. I am assuming its therefore either the switch or the micro switches........it worked about 2 weeks ago, no problem so cant understand why it should suddenly stop.....just cos the sun came out !

If you are confident that the fuses and relay are OK then yes, switch next ... I'm not sure if it is the same pattern as any others on the car (possibly the window switches). If it is, you can pinch one from elsewhere on the car as a diagnostic.

Microswitch is more complex. I don't know much about them.

The main failure point on the 944 sunroof is the front microswitch - In the centre of the roof at the front - the switch should be actuated all the time the roof is installed (when its removed the mechanism is disabled). The front switch is adjustable to a degree by turning the mount screw which will raise or lower the plastic lug that presses the switch in. You can check the switch is actuated by pressing it with a small thin screwdriver between the roof lug and the roof trim.

If not, then there are two relays in the boot - behind the trim above the battery box (RHD)
There are two microswitches on the motor plate near the relays.
The switch itself rarely fails, unless it feels stiff / loose its usually okay.....

These can be a headache but usually are a coomon simple fault.

If the car has the later mechanism with the unit in the boot a contained unit with the cable passing round in a curve then the most common problem is either the gears breaking or the micro switch that is visible near the top of the unit needing to be pushed down a bit. You will see it is held in place by a screw and can easily move and prevent it operating. Also check that the plastic joiner connecting the outer steel tube (in which the cable runs) has not popped apart - it is just in front of the mechanism where the cable run goes up the inside of the wing.

The earlier type had a long slider extending to the back of the wheel arch to the rear light unit. If it is one of these they often become disconnected so that the plastic runner stays still and stops the logic circuit working. To test this carefully feel under the runner and follow the slider to see if it is stuck at the back end all the time.

The front centre micro switches do fail as well but you can wire around it to check - as it is only an on off switch anyway. Just pop it out of its holder to check, there is a plug tucked inside the roof lining area.

The front microswitch in my S2 wasn't engaging with the metal finger at the front centre of the sunroof- fixed it by bending it slightly downwards.

So did I not have the answer then?????

Yes you can press it but if the problem is elsehere on the system - pressing it up and finding it doesn't work still does not explain where the problem is whereas taking the wire out and putting a tester accross the switch will tell you if it is that or not.

I would say 75% of the later type systems stop because the gears have broken or the small microswitch on the top of the unit needs pushing downwards.
