If these tests werent done on the same day, in the same conditions then it really doesnt count for much imho as these cars are so close already in terms of performance, any variance in testing condition could have a serious impact on results.

best,
adam

p.s yeah id go for the 996RS too...

I am sceptical of that figure for the 997. Either the 996 was an exceptional one or the 997 was a lemon. I went head to head with Glenn in his 997 yesterday at Silverstone, and down the straight bits he just reeled me in. Round the twisty bits I was a bit quicker, but that was down to Glenn's lack of time in his car more than a machine issue.

The 997 is definitely a quicker car. They make 435bhp out of the box (and Glenn's is nudging 450 now).

I had 3 passenger sessions in Glenn's RS at Silverstone on Tuesday, the very last thing it would lose is anytime in a drag race with a 996 RS. The car is awesome in every department the PASM in sport mode on track is all you will ever need, the car has totally neutral handling has grip levels at the rear well beyond the 996 GT3 RS. This 996 rs v 997 rs debate will run on, drive both and you will know the answer.

At first, I thought that the 997 was a quicker car but the engine in my 996 was well down on power due to a faulty knock sensor. My subsiquent on track experience suggests that they are not quicker. Interestingly when there are several 997s at the same day all seem to be closer to the pace than the 996 contingent where there tends to be a much greater disparity in speed. I think that this is down to the nature in which the 997 gives up its performance. It is a much easier car to drive near the limit than the 996. In that sence, I think that the 997 is a quantum leap forward. Put a race driver in both (providing the 996 is on cups) and there will be very little in it, put a driver of reasonable ability in both cars and he will be quicker in the 997.

Doesn't make sense to me, 997 has more bhp,,sure but slightly higher weight, however the lower gearing should make a difference in acceleration runs..spurious data?

Interesting results. I'll just say this - if I was expecting a magazine to play with or distort results, it wouldn't be a German automotive magazine, and it wouldn't be Sport Auto.

I'm fascinated by the 997 GT3 feedback concerning dyno-d BHP. Pretty much anyone with a 997 GT3 seems to be coming back from these tests claiming anything from 15-35 BHP up on factory quoted figures. Porsche's first ever free lunch?

Orabidoo, not your first post re. 997vs996

The 996 RS is indeed very fast (mine was abit tuned however) and I really loved it! I do believe that the 997RS has def. moved thing forward (incl. performance). Not to mention that the 997 GT3 is one of the most enjoyable cars I have driven (and the RS is even better). Can't wait for mine!

Not quite... not uncommon for Porsche to make over the numbers. Some what of a tradition for Porsche to understate the numbers a bit I have found - all my cars have always made what the manufacturer claimed plus a bit more.

How accurate the measuring equipment is something that always comes up in these sorts of conversations... the reality is we will never know... but when tested with other manufacturers cars Porsche always seem to make more power then they should relative to other brands.

No doubt. Still - an extra 15-30-odd BHP is certainly pushing the boat out from 'typically conservative estimate', to 'Wow. Thanks Porsche'. Nice to have it if it's free.

[quote=zanzibar drive both and you will know the answer.[/quote]

I have driven both back to back on track and enjoyed the 996 more - albiet a Manthey 996RS. Which i actually think is faster too.

I said from my first track day in my 997 (which was a very wet one at cadwell) that there would be alot of 997 rs's this year going very fast on track - they are so easy to drive in the dry and wet and can make a novice look like a relative professional. Takes alot of the fun out of it to me.

I cannot deny that the 997 *is* a better car on the road and to look at but just doesnt suit me. (for 40k more)

The issue with "a bit more weight" might be bigger than it seems. For the 997GT3 Porsche quote dry weight. I'm not sure whether this was true for the 996 as well. In reality, the weight difference might be much bigger and just cancel out the impact from increased bhp.

Improving each new model isn't just about the speed surely!

The data above aside (one tested in hot July weather another in March for example!)hasn't the 997GT3 taken a quantum leap forward with regards to on road usage, daily driver potential, interior, sound, styling (subjective I know), reduced serving costs, etc etc.

It is now two cars in one, every bit as good if not a bit better than the 996GT3/RS on track & nearly as comfortable & usable as a 997S on road, win win .....big step forward IMO!

997 gt3 rs - fantastic car, very desirable, one day perhaps.

meantime i'll go for 996 gts rs, caterham 7 superlight r and subaru forester 2.5 xt towcar, all 3 cars for the same money as a new 997 gt3 rs. without the waiting list.

One thing to note is that the Mk1 and Mk2 times are on normal Pilot Sport road tyres , so if you take that into account there is not much in the times between them all. As Steve says the 997 is "easier"to drive fast so I will just have to work harder out there..
