Having had to let my 996 go. I am finding myself drawn towards a £10k 911 for weekend use.
I read all about the 996 & associated problems, but these older cars are a grey area for me.
There seems to be 3 options.
3.0 SC, 3.2 Carrera or a cheap 964. Examples below.
I am a complete mechanical clueless idiot, I am wasteing money here and better of with a MX5? hope not.

If any one could point out the diffrence in the SC & 3.2 that would be good.

Here are the examples I have seen.

Get a 3.2 onwards, get it inspected and don't limit yourself to 10k... an extra 3 or 4k spent at purchase could save that amount in the first 6 months of doggy ownership.

You can get a decent 911 for 10k, but it is hard if you don't know what you're looking at. Budget 15k for a well cared for example from an enthusiast with receipts for 15k of work done to it and you will be more than happy. Buy a £9995 munter that polished up OK but is a hound underneath and you could easily spend a fortune on the bugger. You could spend half the amount again on an engine rebuild.

Because 3.2 prices have solidified so much, I'd suggest a 964 as the market doesn't like them as much as it should. A nicely cared for left hooker for 13k would be my personal choice.

The green LHD 964 on PH is my old car, I should declare a certain interest as its my brother selling it however its is a truly lovely motor. It was the project car for Porsche and 911 world so has a few subtely upgraded bits (mirrors, roof spoiler, rear belts, stronger lights and door handles). I ran it for a couple of totally trouble free years before selling it to my brother who is a bit of an obsessive. Hes had the wheels refurbished, pads and discs and new clutch and spent god knows how much on Zymol. Its just lovely and i reckon he should pitch it some way higher at 12K to 13K but he was looking for a quick sale for house reasons. Very worth a look and am really struggling with myself not to buy it back. Generally I would say a 964 less than 10K would be a dog but this one is wonderful.

A cheap 964 bought privately would probably be the same car you would see at a dealer for £14 - £15k.
The dealer values the car at £10k, he has to have his margin to cover any work, part ex, warranty etc, (he has a living to make). The bloke who owns it thinks blimey, these are £15k in the adverts, so sells it for a couple of thousand less than retail, but asks a couple of thousand more than he was offered.
I have friends who are car traders, but not Porsche specialists, and 964's are around for £8k and sometimes a little less. These may not be cars you would want to own, due to body work and mechanical issues.
An sc or 3.2 carrera or a lhd 964 at this kind of money will cost you in maintenance as they are old cars. They cannot go down much in value and because they are old they have a classic car charm about them, so not something to drive every day but nice to take out just for the pleaseure of driving.
I have a 964 and I am under no illusions of its value, but it is bloody good value, and a very competent car which can still do 150mph, and is cheap to insure.
You may not impress the neighbours as much as a newer car would, but so what.

Now in my seventh year of ownership of a 1980 SC.

My advice, buy a car from someone like me! In the first three years of ownership I paid for rebuild of engine (top end £3.5k), gearbox (1.0k), misc brakes and other bits and bobs (£3.0k) and full repaint (£3.0k). So, £11k for the car and another £10.5k to get it to where I want it.

If I'd gone out and spent £15-16k on an absolute mint 3.2 I'd have saved myself a lot of grief.

Good ole hindsight again but I've heard this story so many times I'm sick of telling it to myself!!!

My motor's not for sale 'cos I lurves it but I'm sure there are similar cars out there which have had plenty spent on them. My annual running costs are c.£300 for a good service - the car is rock solid, does several track days and trip to Le Mans every year (livery for last year's Le Mans is shown in profile).

As for choosing between an SC 3.0 and a 3.2, there's little difference apart from the later G50 gearbox fitted to 3.2 from c.1985 (not absolutely sure). This is apparently a much better gearbox that the old box which was around for decades. Also, the earlier SC was not a powerful as the later ones.

Best advice is to buy some back issues of 911 and Porsche world which have done reviews. There are also some good books out there.

So If I pick up a good one, I will get my service man do give it a once over, I will not spent more time in the workshop than on the road.
It will be used for spirited driving but not full out thrashing,

There was a white C reg 911 for sale at the specialist who fitted my sports exhaust a few months ago.It looked in extremely good condition and I was sorely tempted to buy it as an additional car but my other half would have gone mad.I dont think my 997 will look as good when it is 20 years old.Looking at how much I would get for my car now I estimate it has lost £20k in depreciation-I could buy 2 of the older cars outright for that!!

Dom's spot on as usual (good to have you back mate) - 964 seems generaly unloved, can be used daily and even if it is in need of a top ender, seems to run forever...

Guess it comes down to what shape you want. I went 'up' to an SC in age terms - my search started in the early 70's but I was put off by the lack of rustproofing. Has turned out that a good 2.4 would have been a better investment value wise but maybe would have needed more tlc.

Isn't the 964 less popular because it's more expensive to service? I assume parts for the 3.0 SC and 3.2 must also be cheaper because this platform was around since c.1975? I do like the look of the 964 but it somehow seems neither classic or modern.

In any case, buy the best one of any of the three and you'll be a tad happier than if you'd bought an MX5!!

To drive the 964 is way more modern than a 3.2, power steering, Abs and other goodies. To look at it isnt quite the classic 911 shape but pretty close. Its really the best of both worlds, near modern drive, near classic looks. Also the fact that its a little unloved makes it along with the 996 the biggest bargin 911.

Damm that 911 & porsche world car has came down to £9900. It is just a bit to soon for me, but that is a lot of car for the money.
