Ruby it Hpi checks on the cherished number, but only shows as Cat B on an older L reg number that it has carried...........it should have been scrapped in 2003.......the mileage of 36K is wrong too (least of its problems)

i hate people that write "very fast car" , it sort of says "been thrashed"
(and smashed to bits in this case !)

I think with a judicious application of spacing and some careful placing of black bolts - you could make the number plate into 'CRASHED' - must be why it's worth 1k.

So to understand HPI did have it down recorded via the vin number but not the reg plate alone. Are private plates often used as ruses to lose an "unfortunate incident" then? Is there any quicker way to find out from dvla all the previous keepers without using snail mail and a form?

Ian, when it you Hpi a car it also checks on previous registration numbers, in this instance the vehicle was written off when it carried its original "L" reg ..........its very much buyer beware where transfers are involved, as Hpi isnt always accurate.

I always hpi on both plate and VIN. But even then, I found a hole - I bought a 3.2 cab and hpi'd it knowing it had finance outstanding - came up clean...!

I discovered that the finance company had given the wrong number plate and hadn't quoted VIN either....

....and Ferraris?....often only the last 6 chassis numbers appear on hpi....my 308 therefore came up as a Cavalier, Renault and dump truck!...had to write to each of these finance companies for written confirmation that they had no title to the car!

...oh and the private plate on my Jeep?...for some reason also registered to a BMW M5....

Be careful, i have hpi'd cars before only for them to show as write offs and in fact it has been because a cherished plate has moved between multiple cars one of which got written off, if you hpi the written off plate (you may have done already) then it sometimes shows that the 911 write off was in fact a vauxhall cavalier!

Cat B ???

Ouch!

Would that be likely to be obvious on viewing/driving?

But in this instance the CatB seems to be against the original L plate, which is unlikely to be registered to another car.

correct, this is the original number the car carried, and then is put back on when a cherished plate is removed
