Ruf CTR3: official details and spec

All new supercar from Ruf

Nearly 700bhp for CTR3
Nearly 700bhp for CTR3
You're looking at what should be one of the quickest and most effective performance cars of 2007. This is the Ruf CTR3, the latest creation from the Pfaffenhausen-based Porsche legend.

Details of the new car have been leaking out onto the web over the last 48 hours, and much to Ruf's concern, the assumption has been that the CTR3 is Cayman based. In fact, only the rear lights are shared with Porsche's mid-engined production coupe, the rest is altogether more exotic.

We're aware that some of you may have seen the images and details already, but for the benefit of those that haven't we've posted them here. We're also posting the official full specifications and the word on the cars construction gathered from speaking to the Ruf team.

The starting point for a CTR3 is the front crash structure and floor pan of a 997, delivered straight from Porsche. Using this allows Ruf to take advantage of Porsche's enormous investment in safety and chassis technology in line with their large unit production numbers. A roll cage structure joins with the A pillars and sills for strength and stiffness, with a cradle attached behind the occupant cell to hold the engine and the transversely mounted gearbox. Ruf take the aluminium doors (with side-impact protection) and bonnet from the 997 Turbo and GT3 models, while the rest of the body panels - unique to Ruf - are made from a carbon-composite material.

The CTR3 uses one of Ruf's full house flat sixes. With a capacity of 3,746, two KKK turbo chargers and two air/air intercoolers, it produces 690bhp. The gearbox has been developed by Ruf with a 'leading industry supplier' and is a fully sequential six-speed unit operated by a central gearlever. It should have no trouble in coping with the CTR3's 657lb ft of torque as it's apparently safe up to nearly 900lb ft of twist.

The first cars will be ready for test later this summer. For the full details, read on below...

Spectacular, and I'm sure that even though it costs nearly 450,000 Euro including VAT, someone will say it represents value for money.... but seriously - they're not kidding around with that sticker price, are they.

I like this but the rear clam shell over the engine looks dare I say it cheap, I am sure that in construction it is not but visually it looks very poorly designed with little flair ?

Abt, Gandini, et al. please take a good look and learn how it is supposed to be done. IMHO, this is not perfect, but close enough to make you think why Porsche haven't sat up and thought to themselves whether or not they've missed a trick or two. I much prefer the front end of this than the 997 turbo... so much more in keeping with what a turbo should be like!

A pity in some ways that it's not 4 wheel drive (dont know how they'd package it with a mid mounted engine though) especially given their history. I think that it also looks really nice and very contemporary porsche (although i do hold some misgivings about the rear engine cover). I difinately think that it looks better than a carrera gt and that porsche have certainly missed a trick with the power output if nothing else. Overall though, a nice concept and nice looks. Maybe it could be thought of as a modern day 959.

Would think so, says the engine is mounted on a cradle just behind the 'occupant cell', plus there isnt enough rear overhang for it to be rear mounted ala 911.

Echo whats already been said, looks brilliant and should perform just as well. Starting to see some proper german 'hypercars' coming through in the last few years, wonder what's taken them so long....

FWIW my original source for the CTR3 being 'Cayman based' (Dutch mag AutoWeek - sister mag to AutoExpress and AutoBild) has now rectified that statement. Sorry for the confusion.

That is a very cool car, still think the koenigsegg CCR / CCX beats it to the top of my lottery list for clear insanity advantage.

Awesome! You know it's a proper supercar when it's got Lambo style rear window visability!
