so i've had a quote to repair some rust spots which, unfortunately, are dotted all over the car, virtually one per panel.

and of course the body-shop are recommending repairs, prep, prime and paint to entire panels (all wings, both bumpers, screen surround, both doors, bonnet etc).

quote - £2200!

my question is, can a company like Chipsaway be trusted to do a decent job on rust spots (and therefore save me a fortune). has anyone used them for this?

the car in question's a lovely, slate grey 968 cab with 109k on the clock and, although i want to repair and improve the car to a good standard, £2200 on the body alone just doesn't seem to make economic sense (it also needs a new clutch and a service, while i've shelled out £400 on an essential styling exhaust).

any thoughts my friends?

Richard

For odd spots I'm sure chips away are fine as long as it is a really limited area and preferably not on a big flat panel. I used them on one of my cars on an couple of areas which really needed the whole panel done and frankly the job is sub standard even though the guy came recommended and really worked hard on the car. If you want them to cover lots of little spots the price will trot up pretty quickly. If you need to do panels I'd shop around for bodyshops to see what you can get a little cheaper. Agree it doesnt make sense to spend over £2,000 on an £8,000 car unless you plan to keep it for a good while.

Thanks David. Car was £9k in the end (wish I'd hung on to that blue one you sold me.....!!) and is beginning to cost me a whole lot more.

Still, the grey is stunning and the manual gearbox a joy.

But you in particular know that you buy are car thinking you'll keep it and then you keep surfing the classifieds or something else happens and you end up selling.

I think i need to bite the bullet here and spend the £2,200 though. I've done a bit of searching and Chipsway get more criticism than recommendations.

The quote is from Auto Attractions in Dorking - 01306 875871. the guy's name is nick (tell him i passed on his number, he might reduce my quote!!)

The other work's being done by a young ex-Porsche mechanic called Adam Davey at Cayman Autos (also in Dorking) and I'd really recommend him. He knows his stuff and really bothers to talk things through with you. I guess it's the hunger and attention to detail that a young guy trying to build a business will put in. But having a specialist within walking distance is great. His number is 01306 885566.

I can recommend www.littleknocks.co.uk/ for this kind of work. I've had good results from them at a reasonable price.
