What is it that makes the noise on a 986 boxster S so distinctive? Expecially when it's cold, there is a whine that sounds almost like a supercharger! What is that? I love it. Petrolhead heaven! yum

If you open the bonnet and look inside you will see a large wheel/disk, you will see it spins freely.

If you open the lid and throw some hamster food in there then they should be far quieter in future

That's one of the main reasons I sold mine. It was a 2000 S model. Great car otherwise but the whining sound let the car down and was very irritating. The 987 S doesn't do this but instead it had a very artificially tuned sound. A bit like a muffled Ferrari 355 which is a shame since the flat 6 makes it's own characteristic sound naturally.

One man's meat is another man's poison! I like having a car that feels a bit different from the norm.

I think there is a variable intake manifold that is acoustically tuned- I found the 2.7 also sounds good. The 2.5s are a bit whiney-maybe becasue they dont have the same vaiable intake. I too love the sound!

Hi

The noise you refer to is probably the auxillary air pump which blows air into the exhaust system to exite the catalytic convertors to get them up to temperature quicker.....more emission crap.

That makes sense. Is it belt driven / or driven to follow rpm?

Can I fit a second one to make it louder? With an on demand switch in the cabin? laugh
