Any body had problems with the Alternator over charging, had Alternator checked that OK. Told that it could be the ECU. Any help would be appreciated.

Votlage regulation is normally the job of the regulator/rectifire not the ECU confused

Agree with this, don't think the ECU will be involved in voltage control. It may be damaged by a lack of it though!

Quite agree regarding the ECU, however the chap who checked the Alternator said that there was a ECU connection on Alternator. Got me thinking. Dont like the word ECU sounds expensive.

You have a main alternator cable on the back big red cable in a platic sheath and a single wire that goes to the instrument cluster.....??

If its over charging it will blow the headlamps and most bulbs, then the instrument cluster will pack up and so on...i had a C4S do this a couple of months back..

If its over charging it will be down to the regulator pack on the back of the alternator being faulty.

Thanks for the advice about the regulator pack, had it changed and car was fine for a few miles, then it returned with the volts suddenly going up to 18v. The battery volts are low, less than 12v. Will change battery and see what happends, it needs a new on any way so I will see how we get on. Thanks for the help.

Hello

You have answered your own question...you had it changed it was fine but now faulty again....unless there is a faulty connection anywhere with a really high resistance it will be the alternator again....had this once an a aston martin it had 90% burned the main alternator charging wire off the back of the alternator and it was spiking at 17V but repaired this and it was fine 14.4V.
