advice on Buying a 928 S4
Discussion
Sounds high for that mileage. There's a buyers guide on www.928.org.uk, also check the 928 forum on Rennlist.
Best bet is to take a 928 owner. There are quite a few of us about, and know what to look for. Obviously body damage, plus leaking steering rack, vacuum system problems, silly wheels, damaged interior, electrical issues (some 928 specific ones too), torque tube and gearbox noises, odd tyre wear indicating suspension damage and so on.

Well I can confirm that on mine Ive had to replace the Tourque tube and the steering rack, both common. Have also replaced the Fly wheel due to a faulty starter motor helping it fall apart and the fuel pump which failed but I'm not sure if these are common faults. Also ensure that the cam belts have been changed as they should have as a broken belt usually means the engine goes. Electrics are complex and can be heavy on the battery if there is a fault somewhere, so I'd like to see not to much drain on the battery. I'd be keen to see a car that had been looked after by indies who know the 928, Northways, Loe bank and Paul Anderson (Porsche spares) come to mind. Otherwise 928.org.uk is a good place to start and they have a pretty active maling list. I would have thought youd have to spend £6-8k for a good digi dash S4 and a bit less for an analogue version. Am selling my S4 at the moment so we may catch up at some point.

Buy on condition and history, not mileage.
I spent ages and ages looking at crap low mileage cars described as excellent and ended up buying a car done 121k but with 1 family owner, a fully stapmped service book (21 in total !) loads of invoices and its not missed a beat yet apart from a dicky ignition switch.
Take your time - the right car with be a pleasure to own, the wrong one will be a very, very expensive nightmare !

Hi
I am the PCGB 928 moderator...6k is around correct for that mileage..maybe even a little cheap....as said above...take a 928 owner with you as we all know the common problems..generally the engines are bulletproof..and most problems are electrical...so make sure EVERYTHING electrical works....or drive down the price if they dont...
All the best Brett

Brett,
where would you say is the best place to sell a 928? Strikes me it will appeal to a pretty limited and well informed audience so auto trader and fleabay may not be good options. Mine is on PH classifieds and Im just about to put it on the 928.org.uk site, any other thoughts ?
