My clutch "went" today (not sure where to, but certainly doesn't appear to have relationship to the engine any more!).

Car is an 03 Box S, with 27k on the clock, but prior to me spent a fair deal of its time in London.

Is it normal for a clutch to go from perfectly OK to fcensoreded in the space of a few miles (maybe 30 gearchanges in total)?

well, ive been told Porsche clutches dont slip, they just get heavier and heavier until you cant engage them.

If its *gone* then that would suggest something in the mechanicals that mates the clutch with the gearbox?

I'll wager 5 internet pounds that it's either the slave or master cylinder

Hmm. I wait the call from Northway Porsche with baited (sp?) breath (and a very scared wallet!)

Interesting - it was slipping like a bastard in pretty much every gear......

Fidgits, you have bee wrongly informed, they can slip just like any other clutch that is getting worn or has got contaminated.

5000k and my 996tt needed yet another clutch !! I have now gone for a RSR spring plate and a racing friction plate with a lightened flywheel - lets see how long this lasts.

Mine used to slip in top gear above 4000 revs (circa 180mph)

that was bloody quick repair!

Did you not get any smell coming from the rear when you were at rest in the last few weeks; or the revs going well through the range above 3/4k rpm with little / no corresponding power coming on in the higher gears?

Are you sure it's not the first signs of an RMS problem, with the oil contaminating the clutch?

No smell, nothing. It was fine and then it was gone - literally just like that in the space of maybe 20 mins!!! Weird, as I have had clutches go on previous cars & you normally get a week or so where you can feel it slipping ever so slightly.

On a positive note, while it was out, they checked the RMS and that is perfectly OK, so a big worry out of the way (for the moment!).

However, I want to give a massive recommendation to Northway Porsche.

I called them as soon as it happened yesterday (as I was coming onto the M4 at Swindon). 30 minutes later I was at their premises (about 3.00pm). Explained what happened & also my predicament (my wife is out of the country, with her car in LHR long term & I need my car to pick my son up from Nursery). Northway asked me to leave it with them for them to squeeze in when they could. 11.30am this morning, the phone rings with it all completed, with them having prioritised it for me. Absolutely fantastic service. thumbup
