Guys, there's an annoying squeaking coming from behind the seats in my 996RS. I'm sure it's from the cage, like it's loose. You try and shake it and it's rigid though... does it need to be "tightened" (they not welded in are they? like 993RS CS FIA homologated cage?)

Are you sure it's not coming from the plastic rear screen

My cage does too. The OPC try to adjust and generally just make things worse. In fact every time they try to fix a noise it came back worse, so my advice is to turn up the radio or drive faster too!

my RS makes a funny noise, not unlike an electrical cable sparking, only happens when reversing out of my drive (declined) on full lock, I assume its the rear screen??

All part of its character.

It's probably the LSD working.

Last time I chased this most annoying fault it turned out to be a rear suspension strut bush. I could have sworn it was the cage but the noise was being transmitted up the strut into the car - worth checking out?

Guys - I've got the loudest exhaust EVER on this car (tiny cats and mufflers which do sod-all) and I can still hear the squeaking over it - Believe me it's VERY annoying...
P.S. No it's not the diff.

Check those bushes - just had to have mine done. You are describing the exact symptons and annoyance levels I had - to be expected if tracked a lot...

Just to elaborate - this noise was driving me bonkers and I was convinced it was the cage until I had run out of bolts to tighten. Then I got outside the car and gave it a good rocking (by standing on the sill)and I could hear the squeek under the wheel arch. On the ramp at OPC Exeter to track it down, almost missed it but you could see that the bush at the bottom end of the strut that connected to the wishbone was begining to fall apart. Isolating the bolt and moving the strut showed the movement.

If you are running standard suspension this might mean a new strut.

Good luck - in a way I hope it is not the case as a new strut is not cheap and my OPC tell me that they cannot just re-bush it. (Does anyone know differently?)

Do you track it a lot?

Other stuff worth checking...

Alloy protective plate twixt suspensionb arm and brake disc - ensure not rubbing on either part

Sway Bar - lubricate with vaseline

Strut moving parts - can get filthed up, lube with WD40

Failing that it's back to the bush!
