I'm checking out new wheels for my 996 and found that non genuine wheels (ie. from Elite) are hugely cheaper than genuine Porsche wheels. Can they really be that much worse? surely a wheel is a wheel?
Any comments?

Usually much heavier and not guaranteed to be as strong.

Wheel weight significantly affects handling, depending on what car you drive.

Aren't those wheels called sports classics or something similar. Don't think thet are GT3 ones but I stand to be corrected. Perhaps he wants to change em as I bet they're right b**ggers to clean :-)

GT3 wheels are Sport Designs. Sport Classics are similarly split rimmed but the centres are different (more spokes, of alternating lengths).

I have a set of freshly refurbished GT3 wheels if anyone wants a set (£600).

Need to consider air flow too....

Porsche wheels are designed to pump air out of the wheel arches throught the spokes as they rotate - ie helping brake cooling.
Form follows function - they're not just designed to look pretty...

Many other wheel manufacturers do this the other way around - pumping air in rather than out.

I have heard of a number of instances of brake fade/cooling issues and high speed instability (due to high pressure in the wheel arches) all down to aftermarket wheels being fitted.

Food for thought...

Make sure you declare them to your insurance company, otherwise bye bye cover.
