Having dreamt about owning a 911 for as long as I could spell "car" (nearly as long as the 911 has been about!), I now have one and love it to bits.

It's a 2000 996 C4 coupe tip. The car is absolutely superb, if a little comfortable/competent (how can that be a criticism?) compared to the Chimaera I had a few years ago!

Anyway... reason for the post is to ask you knowledgeable chaps (and chapesses) to advise on the stereo. As has often been commented upon, for what when new was not far short of £70Ks worth of motor, the stereo leaves a LOT to be desired.

Has anyone upgraded theirs with any third party/after market head units/amps/speakers. If so what with? Are there any specialists that could be recommended in (or near) West London that know about 911s as well as their kit?

Colin,
Most definitely speak to Greg Morris at Auto Audio Installations - they really know their Porsches and their kit - they sorted out excellent new speakers for my 3.2 and won't persuade you into going for massive amps / subs / seriously expensive drug dealer type kit. Although that said they did put two large bass tubes where the rear seats should be in my mates 993 Turbo 4 (why oh why ?????). They were based on Wood Lane just by the Beeb until a couple of months ago, they've now moved to Hangar Lane somewhere - I haven't got the change of address card at work I'm afraid. Their old phone number was 02087494949 (might still work), failing that Lawrence at Chelsea Carrera will definitely have the new number, he's on 02076102326.
Good luck !

Easy now. You could do worse than to instal a hidden system comprising: Dynaudio front speakers, Phoenix Gold zx amps, one small JL Audio sub, Alpine cd unit. It won't be cheap, but it will be real hi-fi, not just a boom 'n' tweet system. About 3k.

If that's still not high end enough, you could go for a full McIntosh system, possibly mixed in with a touch of Alpine Status F1. About 10k.

Stereo???......fit a sports exhaust if you don't have one and drive everywhere with the windows down...This will sound much better than any Alpine,Bose kit you may fit!
