I am looking to buy a 1987ish 911 but I am unsure about checking the oil. I beleive that this should only be checked while the engine is running and warm. Is this the case?

I bought a buying guide from 911 and Porsche world but it really gives no more info than most experienced car buyers would already know.

Any specific 3.2 Carrera issues that I should be looking for please let me know.

Correct
Warmed up, and with the car on the flat

& running of course.

(the revs might drop as you remove oil filler cap)
but thats normal

Look for rot in the following places;

1) Underneath the headlamp bowls.
2) Top of the front inner wings.
(reach up inside the wheelarch and feel for the ledge to which the outer wing attaches.
3) Along the drivers side sill, where the oil cooler flow and return pipes run.
4) By the bottom of the chassis side doorframe below the door catchplate.
5) Around the kidney bowls (inches from 4 but on the bodyside at the front of the rear wings).
6) The rear torsion tube support brackets, if you can get to them.

I would make sure the oil is VERY hot and see if the thermostat has opened, feel the pipes under the wing and cooler under the front wing and make sure they are hot (mind your fingers)

Just over half way on the dipstick is about right, anymore and it can overflow in the engine compartment and drip down onto the heat exchangers causing smoke

Rust is the otherthing to look for, the areas Dilbert said really. Take a look at the pictures on my website: www.carrera3.co.uk and you can see the major rust areas. Forget galvanising, all pre 89's rust!

Crawl underneath the back bumper and check the exhaust system (£1-1,500), check whether the heating works as this is either heat exchangers or the valves which get rusted up.

Oil leaks are common, the odd drip is not a big deal, they are mainly from the sender located at the rear of the top of the engine.

cheers
