Buying My First 996 this week anything to look out for
Discussion
Hello all,
I have been browsing the forum for the last few days to get clued up on what to look out for, I have found a lot of valuable information from your posts....So thank you!!
I have been to view a (well what I think, a good clean looking car) but I am still a little nervous as I have only ever bought other makes and they have all been from main Dealers...(or stealers should I say!)So they have always come with warranty...
I found the car on autotrader,

Your thoughts and what to look out for would be of great help!!
I am also thinking of getting the PSE fitted in the near future, have any of you got any recommendations on where to buy and where to get it fitted I am in Watford so London and the home counties would be preferable
Thanks in advance
Rob

Get the seller to agree to an OPC 111 point inspection so you can be sure the car is as good as you think it is, they say it is. If it passes, or if they identify work needing in order to pass, you can use this as a negotiating point should you still want to go ahead and buy it.
Lots of things can go wrong with Porsche's and there is no such thing as a cheap one.

Hi Rob
The car looks great. Very good spec and a reasonable price, although I would try to beat him down to 33k
basic checks are the best. have a look at the service history, do the mileges tally with any service invoices? Dont be afraid to call the OPC's to see what work they did on the car.
Also make sure that the information on the ID sticker on the underside of the bonnet tallys with the sticker on the first page of the service book. you will find a long list of option codes, starting with C16 - this is a UK spec car. you can google the spec codes and they should tell you what the car has had fitted to it.
once you are happy with this, get it booked in for an OPC inspection. it will cost you £250 but it is well worth it. if it passes you can then buy the extended warranty for £875 a year (and its good cover) even if you dont want to stretch to this, then the inspection will pull up the usual tell tale problem signs such as a leaking rear main seal or worn brakes.
Finally, check the service booklet. at around the age of this car, it will now be due for a 40,000 mile/ four year service. has this been done? the service book will say if it has had a major service and if so whether it has had a brake fluid change and replacement spark plugs. If neither has been done then it will cost you in the region of £1000 so you need to get this knocked of the price. Also check the tyre tread depth (feel the tread wear indicators in the grooves) a new set of tyres will set you back 800 quid
the pse is a great mod to go for on the carrera. mine had one and it was great. i know some regulars have had their pse's fitted at OPC stratford for about 1500 and comended the work so they may be worth a look.
if it is a straight car and all the above checks out then i think you will have a beaut on your hands.
good luck and let us know how it goes.

Only one hint: Buy this piece asap. Looks great...
On my first viewing I checked all the bodywork and tires, it is going to need a new rear near side tire (already negotiated off price) and two of the alloys need a referb which he is happy to knock off the price, the interior looks mint though for the age!! It is due for a service so it will have to employ some of that builder’s dry teeth syndrome …..(shhhh its gonna cost to get that sorted!!….
) so I might be able to get some shillings off the price. I will book it in for an OPC check tomorrow morning if all checks out then I will part with the green stuff!!
I am getting very excited in the prospect of owning one now, I have only had BMW 3 series before and a total U turn on last car with a Range Rover Sport HSE oil burner…..so I am looking forward to having a car that can do 0-60 in sub 10 seconds!!
thanks for you advice, Wetwipe, DR S, Grey Ghost
I will let you know how it goes, hopefully fingers crossed it’s as good under the hood as it is on the outside…..

Hi Rob,
What a lovely looking car. I bought my 996 a couple of months ago, and like you I was a little nervous of the pitfalls and all the doom stories. All I can say is that every time I look at it, drive it or even just think about I grin from ear to ear. Get the warranty and enjoy it. They are wonderful.
Good luck!

Very interesting post from Wetwipes,Can you tell me what the test youy refer to is and where is it carried out.
I am interested in getting an 03/04 996 cab tip as a first porsche and am trying to find out what i need to know about them and more to the point what about the engine issue (if it still exists)
Can anyone guide me here?
