Orange Boxsters

Limited edition Boxsters for the USA

Plenty of orange paint on the Stuttgart shelves then...
Plenty of orange paint on the Stuttgart shelves then...
Porsche seems to be going orange crazy at the moment. After resurrecting the orange with black colour scheme for the GT3RS, and then flipping it somewhat dubiously for the Cayenne Transsyberia, it’s now applied it to the Boxster.

Five hundred of these limited edition Boxsters will go on sale in the USA. The cars (half of which will be the ‘S’ model) are based on a design study shown during the New York Auto show earlier this year.

Each car is painted in GT3RS orange and gets the ‘SportDesign’ body kit, black alloys and the factory sports exhaust. The interior is daubed in various places with orange and black and Alcantara is used on the seat inserts, the RS steering wheel and the hand brake lever.

No word yet on pricings, but we don’t expect them to hang around long.

agree with the bumpers. they ruin any decent car shape. maybe that's the reason the yanks are into suv's, nothing to ruin there visually...

It would like better with an orange hood, orange interior and driven by a guy called Terry!

I've got to be honest sometimes (and only sometimes mind you) I see a new shape boxster 987 driving towards me and I mistakenly take it for a 911 997. They are looking stunning now. Porsche really stepped up after the abysmal and uncomfortable effort that was the 986.

Even so I'm not sure how easily it'll shed it's 'poor mans 911' tag that even my non car-enthusiast, friends seem to grumble everytime they see one drive past. Having said that I'm starting to like (note: not love) this Porsche example. Lots of potential for the future, furthermore it's helping keep the big boy afloat for more of the best.

Definately NOT feeling that rear bumper mould, looks horrendous. Is that how they come as std. in the US?

If you visit the German Porsche website (Porsche.de) and head for the configurator, you can see they're offering the Cayman in what's being called RS Green and RS Orange. Costs over 2 thousand pounds sterling for the colour, mind - but some marketing bod at Porsche has obviously decided to capitalise on the fact that the GT3RS has been so well received in its lairy colours. No bad thing IMO.

shame it is US only

would have good to see some bright coloured 987s in the UK (and without those horrible US impact bumpers)

How much daylight can you see under that car! It needs lowering by 2" at least to pull off the look!

As per my post above, if you want a Cayman or a Boxster in RS Orange or RS Green (or whatever) it's no problem. You just order one, and pay the additional 1500 quid or so over and above what metallic normally costs. A lot of money for sure - but it certainly makes your car more distinctive than, say, PASM, 19" Turbo alloys or PCM or whatever.

You've been Tango-ed. What a plonker you would look driving this soft excuse for a RS Porsche.

I don't know. Get it on sorted suspension, make sure it's a Boxster S and I think it would be a cracking car. Get the bonnet and boot painted in matt black with little chrome fasteners, lighten it, put a little roll cage and lightweight buckets in it and I'd get a boner.

yep I know that, but by Porsche bringing an official tango model people will actually buy one rather than a) baulking at the £1500 option b) baulking at the cliff-like depreciation.

Looks fantastic.

Nothing new though, orange has been on Porsches since the 356.

Fair enough. In the longer run, though - outside of the through-the-teeth-vacuum-cleaning that goes on at OPCs if you arrive in anything that isn't a low mileage silver Tip, I don't think the lairy colours would take much more of a hit. Arguably, their rarity does the opposite. Looking through GT3s at the moment, I'm dismissing everything in silver and black because I'd like something a bit lairier. If you're going to keep a car for 3 years or more, and would get a big kick out of having it in a fabulous and rare colour, I think the potential drawbacks are worth it. More often than not, things like 911s have 10 grand's plus worth of extra gear added to them - you won't see much of this back either, and I'd argue that on some models, having a manual instead of a Tip not only saves you a few quid, but gets you more money back at resale. So special paint at a 1500 quid premium? Doesn't sound too bad to me. Well it does - it's a fecking cheek, but in the grand scheme of things when things like telephone modules and big alloys cost what they do; it's not too bad.

I think the rear 'diffuser' on the bumper is from the boxster facelift due later this year/next year:

Prlease, don't do this to us. Where is Porsche going? The TT is already fussy as hell. No need to repeat this on the Boxster.
