965 Exhaust / Heat Exchangers Rotten Please help !!
Discussion
Hi There, Thankyou for taking the time to read my question, I have a Turbo 964 3.6 (965) and I have a major headache, I am currently having the engine taken out of the car to have the main oil seals done etc, when this is finished I need to have new Manifolds / heat exchangers fitted (mine has a major hole in one and the other has decided to part cpmpany at the joints)! I am spending approx 18,000 euros on it at the moment, so your help would be greatly appreciated.
Do I replace them with the same spec?
(I have found them in America for half the cost of Uk money due to the monetary conversion rates)!
Or alternatively do I order from an exhaust specialist the items which they claim increase the horsepower etc? (Does anyone reccomend a good company)?
Has anyone had this experience? Or know of the differences / which is better!
Again your help would be greatly appreciated in particular as I have decided that as the engine is coming out that I will have a new clutch fitted at the same time, As my car is reasonably rare I obviously do not want to make any mistakes and your suggestions will be gratefully recieved.
Kind regards Chris

Hi Oliver, if you wish to have one for the template for example, then that's fine with me, If you are looking to use them, then forget it, I say that because they have seriously had it! If you like, you are more than welcome to email me on Chrismartin.911@hotmail.com to arrange collection etc, I must point out that they may not be available for another week yet.
Thankyou for the reply, keep them coming please,Regards chris

Hi chris, no certainly not going to use them basically I am building a turbo motor around a 3.6 engine and am looking at a few options including twin or single turbo, a set of heat exhangers to build a mule exhaust round would help massively and keep my hours off road down.
I shall email you!

Phillip Woolley did the same work on my car. Give him a call, he knows the job inside out and the costs were reasonable. I'm not technical, but I know he used a mixture of original and spurious components.

Chris,
My suggestion is don't go original. The 965 heat exchangers cost around £1800. You can fit 3.2 headers for half and they give improvements. The only downside is the fit means the oil filter is difficult (but not impossible) to access. I have these on my car and its great.
Performance headers by GHL B&B etc. will add even more benefits but are liable to cracking (or so many people have said) so longevity maybe an issue. You can get best prices in USA.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Mark, Thankyou for your posting, I can consider the 3.2 option (the oil filter is difficult to get to anyway)! Would you help me further please, do you mean 3.2 carrera exchanger / manifold? Also I notice that your car is the 3.3 turbo (It looks very Nice)!! so would the 3.2's still fit mine please? Kind regards Chris
Hi Chris,
yes mine is 3.3.
And yes, 3.2 Carrera manifolds & exchangers (americans call them headers).
I believe the fit is the same for 3.3 & 3.6 but you'd need confirmation from a garage. If you check whether the correct turbo manifolds are the same for 3.3 and 3.6, that should give you the answer.
As a separate but related subject you ought to go catless (or sports cat) and then get rid of the silencer (Gpipe or swans neck). Although the reputation is that its too loud, it is SO exciting. Everyone who hears my set up loves it and ends up doing it too! There are 4 of my friends who have them or on order!!

Hi Mark, many thanks for that, I will check and see if they are the same, I must admit that I have just found a pair of heat exchangers from the states for the equivilant of 500 Gbp delivered to the door, So I may just go with that for now.
You mentioned a decat pipe, which I have read about.... would you be able to help me further on this? For example my car has 2 cats so which one would you replace? Also as mine is a 1994 model would it still pass the emmision tests on an Mot?
Thankyou so much for your help, Chris

I had a 993 Carrera Coupe with de-cat pipe and stainless system last year and it passed the MOT fine. I hadn't expected it to and had the cat with me in the boot in the expectation that if it didn't actually pass, we could fit the cat and then remove it again after passing the test - or at least make it look like that's what happened
I realise your car is different but don't assume removing the cat(s) means it will fail the MOT test.
As goose says, you don't need a cat to pass MOT emissions. Its the CO2 they measure. You may still pass, especially with the race cat (see below) or if you have a helpful garage that helps you adjust the mixture.
On the 965 we have one main cat (rear box in the centre). If you replace this, you should get one with a sound chambre (eg. Scart) as it sounds better and looks like a cat. They also do a race cat (100 cell) which keeps things CO2 friendly. Techically you'll need the latter. Replacing the original cat will give you better sound and improved torque/ response (more noticeable on the 3.3) and slight HP increase (12hp?)
The box at the right as you look from the back is the main silencer. Replacing this will make it louder still and give more burbles and pops, very addictive sound. Again better response and maybe 5hp.
The left tailpipe is the turbo side and only works when on full boost. This has a small cat and baffle. If you remove these, then you will get a fantastic roar only on full boost. This sound will drown out your left hand exhaust (and anything else for that matter! Its loud!). Others have likened it to a race car, or even a jet engine - awesome!
I have all this done on my car.... ;-)
Hope this help, have fun!

Hi Guys, It's sounding good, So the big cat at the back is the main one that the exit is on the right hand side, from the back.... and the smaller cat then leads to the muffler and then comes out the left hand side (Have I got this right)? If so, would you be kind enough to post me some links of the parts please, to ensure I get it totally right!
Also if I choose this route would I be able to keep my original exhaust tips please?
I am really appreciating your help on this and hopfully it is helping others at the same time, many, many thanks again, Chris

Chris,
you can get it all from here:
www.scart-exhausts.com/ang/produits.php?marque=28&modele=45
I bought my cat bypass from them. Their swans neck (silencer bypass) looks great too, although I got the basic g-pipe (go to www.porscheshop.co.uk or design911.co.uk). I had my wastegate pipe custom made by Hayward & Scott (do a google on them).
Yes you can use your original tips although the wastegate (left) side has a baffle installed, so gut it (local garage?) or keep as is and be a little quieter on boost.
Frankly, if you have the cash (£400ish), you might invest in a nicer set of tips (fabspeed or cargraphic) which don't have the baffle anyway.
btw, where are you based? You should meet up with us sometime and see/ hear our beasts....
