Needed a family car, which also incorporates a nice bit of performance. Test drove a E39 M5 over the weekend, very nice, excellent dynamics, but could not get used to all that power in a manual gearbox... Also starting to look a little dated.

A day after I test drove a Cayenne Turbo, I could not stop smiling on the test drive! It is truely a remarkable engineering feet. The only thing I can equate it to is a jumbo jet taking off the runway.

So have put a deposit on an 04 plate... I hope I will not regret my decision... Do the real Porsche purists out there really hate them?? I must without test driving, I would not have gone for it.

If it wasn't for people buying the Cayenne...then Porsche wouldn't have the cash invest in their sportcars! ....the lesser of two evils I suppose!!

I would love one as a family car BUT i have to agree with kayC, the fuel consumption is a joke and in the long term will effect the prices. 4.4/4.6 X5s are cheaper than the equivalent 3.0d at the moment even though when new the 4.6 was £20k more.

Which is why the V8s are better value, given the mileages most buyers of used ones are doing. Seems daft to me that people will pay £3000 more for a diesel that will save them about a tenner a week in fuel costs (based on 10k miles pa)when they won't be keeping the car more than a year or two. Especially when it means they will be driving something less refined, noisier and less powerful.

1. If you have a big wallet and can cope with being burnt in terms of fuel consumption and depreciation you will enjoy it, so long as you don't mind being a social pariah.

2. Yes.

Well, they will refund the deposit if the car is not up to my standards. Purchased it from an approved centre in the midlands. I am also quite fortunate that my company gives me a fuel card. So I am paying 40% of the fuel each time. However, I would be interested to see how much more in terms of consumption it will be versus my X5 (3.0l Sport)..

Thanks for the opinions..

If you've driven one and liked it good on you. thumbup

So far I've driven the Cayenne and the Cayenne S. Didn't like the basic car but the S was good. I'd imagine the turbo to be even better. As for fuel consumption the cayenne Turbo is no worse than a Supercharged Range Rover, E60 M5 or a Bentley Arnage so sod it. Buy a nicely depreciated one and you're quids in.

I'm not sure quids IN is ever appropriate for a Cayenne.

Lol at those paragons of frugality

Cayenne turbo is more economical than a LM002 or a Humvee H1 but not much by all accounts.

I'd be more worried about the abuse from other road users. You are buying a Porsche AND a 4x4. In the current eco panic our government has cooked up, you are liable to be burnt at the stake!

Meanwhile our government wants to build more airports and encourage more international travel... ho hum...

Like them so much that we have 2. My son bought an '06 base Cayenne on his business and my wife has just bought an '06 Turbo S, both very high spec and thus letting initial purchaser take that big hit.

Its not just the initial purchaser taking the big hit i would add, especially if the car is bought from a dealer..i think with fuel prices and the 4 x 4 'hate' campaign gaining support that these cars will continue dropping money until they get 'binned'as too expensive to repair...eek

I think you have got a nasty surprise coming - there's plenty of scope for two big hits!

There was even a whole anti 4x4 programme on TV last night, presented by John Sergeant.

There'll be Cayennes at under £10k within two years.

And at that point I'll buy one!

Have driven 2 V8s and loved the whole experience - an engineering masterpiece, even if dog ugly on the outside.

The turbo must be almost surreal - I did see one of the Turbo S models before they canned it - that would be worth a blast.

If you don't like the Porsche/4x4 thing there's always the V10 Touareg.

Who cares what the purists think...enjoy it for the awesome machine that it is. I had one of the very first Cayenne S's in 2003, and loved it.

Fuel consumption, increasing road tax etc has hit values. I was staggered at how much they have dropped in the last year...
