Hi,

Well following my post about how I let the porsche warranty lapse last month my 996 went in yesterday for it's 111 point check, to enable me to get a new warranty.

Sure enough, RMS was leaking and OPC needed it to be replaced before they slapped the warranty on - great...:-(

It turns out however, that after entering my cars details (2003/24830mls) into the dealer computer Porsche will cover 100% of the parts and 90% of the labour as my car has less than 25k on the clock.

This I'm told is called a 'goodwill matrix' and means that Porsche will cover costs on a sliding scale according to the age of the vehicle. Interestingly on the same screen as the RMS failure the only other heading was 'Total engine failure' - nice! Clearly these two issues re-occur fairly regularly!

Ironically, had I renewed the warranty before it ran out an inspection would not have taken place and the RMS would not have been picked up.

The OPC also told me that the new RMS is unlikely to fail again as they released a redesigned seal 6 months ago... not holding my breath

That sounds like a very good result. I'm guessing a bill of about £120 then.

I wonder if anyone knows the figures on the rest of the matrix? My car is under a different warranty for the moment but I would like to replace it with OPC. I wonder how much help I would get with a 2000 car at 43k miles, should the RMS be leaking?

I presume that if you had continued the warranty and noticed the leak later, the RMS work would have been done?

Is it worth asking how much a new clutch would be while it's out anyway?

Good news anyway!

Hi,

The clutch was replaced last year before I bought the car - I'm guessing the RMS would have been done then anyway - which is a bit worrying since its gone again....

I was actually getting the warranty to protect against RMS and engine failure, does make me wonder whether it was worth the £900 since porsche would have done the work anyway. Incidentally they would have covered 100% parts/labour for engine failure... It's all about peace of mind though for me..

Like you say it would be interesting to see the whole matrix..

I was quoted £80 all in for the RMS which is booked in next week

Yep sounds weird but the previous owner has an long-term injury to his left foot and when the clutch started getting stiffer he got it replaced for 'comfort reasons'.

At least thats what he told me... perhaps he'd just been doing too many doughnuts

The last one I had done was 18 months ago and they were already on a 997 part number then (car was 02 Boxster S). The new one was a different design, sort of deformable rubbery stuff with metal insert, but if it has be re-designed again since then I guess this didn't work and hence many 997s will suffer in time to come. However, the guy who told you "...6 months ago..." may have been wrong about the timing...

The cynic in me says that Porsche aren't so much thinking of their customer , but more covering their asses by looking after very low mileage cars that have 'unexplained' failures ...

I can add to the matrix. Two weeks ago at major service RMS was reported as moist (not actually leaking)Car is 02 with 72K miles.

I was quoted Free parts and a contribution of 60% to cost of labour = £338.00 incl vat.-Sheffield OPC.

Also replaced at 50k miles cost to me nothing -Cambridge OPC

Also re-placed at 30k miles cost to me £75.00- Sheffield OPC (replaced clutch at my expense)

Not quite sure this proves anything really. I think they actually have more discretion than they let on and charge accordingly. I decided I'd leave it for another year and would have it done then, by which time I would have clutch done again as a precaution ,when I guess car would be around 85k miles. They confirmed I could have RMS replaced as "goodwill" but my contribution would be greater.

I would sum up by saying that if the RMS isn't bad just leave it until you're ready and have a cheap clutch job.

Interesting, when I had my 111 point check at local OPC and they diagnosed RMS, there wasn't a mention of this at all. They wanted to charge ~1200 quid on a 23k mile car, so needless to say I had to go elsewhere. This was a while ago, now I wish I had known about the sliding scale ....

Your car probably didn't have full OPC history, which would mean it didn't qualify for goodwill..

Sure that would be a good enough reason, but the car had full OPC history. The previous owner was a no expenses spared guy.

But given my local OPC has come bottom of the list in all topics so far, this doesn't surprise me.

Charging for 111 pt check with major service, when other OPCs didn't charge - check
Not returning numerous phone calls - check
No mention of goodwill on RMS - check
Listing items like brakes that didn't need to done - check
Giving estimated costs for said brakes etc. ABOVE list price on the web - check

Don't get me wrong, I am not tarring all OPCs with the same brush, some are clearly providing a good customer service. I have been to another one where I have zero complaints.

My car (03 Boxster S) was in at Sheffield OPC a few months back for its 48,000 mile service as well as having its 111 point inspection and warranty re-applied. They found a slight RMS leak and replaced it FOC.

Great info here, cheers guys.

Does this mean that if one's engine/gearbox were to go "pop" unexpectedly and prematurely then one might expect the OPC to make a decent contribution to the cost?

That's the rub. If it's non OPC history at all they'll tell you to swivel. As they are quite entitled to in law.

Why are they entitled to by law?

Not all the OPC's are part of the same company - does that mean an OPC from one group could 'tell you to swivel' if the OPC history came from an OPC outside the group?

I expect they are not really entitled to discriminate depending on the service history of the car, but as it is a 'goodwill gesture', it is probably at their sole discretion anyway.
