There is a mark on the cylinder wall that looks just like the start of a cylinder wall crack. If so this could result in damage to the piston. If so the cost of a rebuild would be much higher.

The picture is in the selection boxes - and is the bottom one on the right hand saide - 5th picture down.

The mark is in the first (nearest) cylinder at about 5 o clock (looking at the end into the cylinder) and it has a slight curve away from a straight line.

When a cylinder cracks this is exactly where the crack occurs and it follows exactly the same shape. You can see photos in our buyers guide on our own web site (www.hartech.org) - section 4 page 114 - showing exactly the same marking which was a crack.

I am just wondering if the lack of one piston and that mark are connected in some way - especially as it seems someone needed to send the piston away to be inspected - which is unusual when an intermediate shaft bearing is damaged - when any debris that interferred with the piston would be clear to see and not require further inspection.

Sorry that mark is just a oil mark where the cylinder has been picked up at some point it will just wipe off. I am not exactly sure why the piston was sent off but i will try and find out.

Hi Baz
I would have thought this would have been right up your street for one of your demon rebuilds.
There are not many 3.6 units about. I would have put a bid in and dropped it in my Boxster but as its got the late camshaft mounted vario units it will not work with my 2000 ECU.
Shame about the rod being missing as I dont think you can get them on their own.got to buy a set.

You are right Dunnit you have to but a set and pistons are also expensive - but the bigger problem is if there is a hairline crack in the cylinder as that would render it completely uneconomic.

And it can only be fitted to a 3.6 due to the variable cam timing and valve lift system - without huge loom and accessory transplants.

It could still be useful for some spares though.
